Solved Fixing the LINKS shortcut in Vista 32bit

Stadian

Hi All,

I have 2 problems I need help solving --

#1 - Links points to My Pictures Location

I unwittingly set my Links shortcut to point to the same folder as My Pictures and for some reason I cannot undo it. If I open my Links, instead of just showing my shortcut, it also shows the folders in My Pictures. Although not crucial to ops, it is rather annoying to see duplicates on my folders in My Pictures.

I found the tutorial on resetting Personal Folders useful but it did not have anything on fixing this type of "merge." The registry entry for Links is just "&Links" which tell me nothing much.

Using regedit, I have managed to fix my personal folder including My Pictures. Only this Links problem persists.

#2 - Wrong icon for C:\Users\My_Name

Second problem --

When I go to the C:\Users\ folders, instead of seeing the folder with my log-on name, I see the folder called DOCUMENTS.

I checked the registry entry for Personal and it points to the correct folder in an E: drive.

I would appreciate some help ... other than recreating my user_id or reinstalling Vista. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Cheers!

Hello Stadian, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Q1) The LNK download at the tutorial link below should help restore the default settings for this for you.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/233243-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

Q2) If it's just your C:\Users\(user-name) folder icon, then you can change the icon back to normal using OPTION ONE in the tutorial below.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/90705-personal-user-shell-folders.html

Also double check using METHOD THREE in the tutorial below to make sure that each user folder as the correct default location set for it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks, Shawn.

I managed to get Q1 resolved and all my shell links now point to the correct folders.

For Q2 however, the issue persists. I do not have a problem with my user folders - I have a problem with my user name folder in c:\users -- (see screenshot), rather with how Vista sees my user name folder.

In Explorer, instead of seeing "Mike" under C:\Users for my folder, I see "Documents."

I know that C:\Users\Mike exists (viewable from outside Vista or from a command prompt) -- it's just that Vista insists on calling C:\Users\Mike as C:\Users\Documents.

I find this very odd behavior. I recall I moved my Documents folder a while back but I have since fixed all folder locations including Documents aka Shell:Personal.

I'm happy to hear that you got the first issue sorted.

Here are a few things to check and try that may help with the second issue more:

1. In the Start Menu search line, type shell:UsersFilesFolder to see if it opens your C:\Users\Mike folder.

2. In regedit, go to the location in bold below and click on the long SID key number (S-1-5-21......1000 in left pane) for this account. In the right pane, check to make sure that ProfileImagePath has the correct C:\Users\Mike path there for you. If not right click on ProfileImagePath and click on Modify to make it so.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

SID-KEY.jpg
3. Open Local Users and Groups, click on Users (left pane), then see if your Mike account has the correct name listed for it displayed under the Name column and in Properties for Full name should be blank.

No dice Shawn. I went through all the steps you outlined and all my settings are pristine - meaning I don't have to change anything.

Other symptoms which may help diagnose -

1. I created a new user called Tina (my wife) and set her up as an Admin as well. Without changing any settings on hers, I took a look at C:\Users from her account and C:\Users\Mike showed. However, after rebooting a couple of times - voila - now it shows Documents as well.

2. Another curious thing is that C:\Users\Mike (aka) Documents has a desktop.ini but C:\Users\Tina does not.

Could it be a faulty desktop.ini setting?

My Computer

Hey Shawn - finally got it solved. It was a faulty desktop.ini setting.

I wasn't sure about desktop.ini and what it was for, but found out from

Vista Vitals: User Files Folders and the Desktop.INI

So I went into my console and set attrib -s -h for desktop.ini in C:\Users\Mike then deleted it.

Now, Explorer shows the correct folders and C:\Users\Mike shows up properly.

Tada! I am a happy guy. :)

Many many thanks for your help.
