Booting using the Vista Media

My computer has gotten the "black screen of death". I have found a tutorial on how to fix it...the only problem is the first step is: "on the affected machine boot using the vista media". How do I do this? I have a refurbished computer and it did not come with any discs. Is there an option to do this using the F2 or F12 keys on the boot-up? Any help would be appreciated!!!

Nope you need an image to boot from. It can be on dvd, usb, HD. If you know someone that might have one you could borrow. Maybe some other user might know where. Im running windows 7 and dont have my bookmarks with me.

To boot from the Windows media you'll need to insert the Windows disk into your DVD drive and restart the computer.

To get to the boot menu you'll have to press a certain key as the system first starts to boot.

Thanks all...no, I have no discs or manuals. It just came by itself...just a refurbished computer. Any ideas where I can get a CD for free by download?

Hello Cmpinggrl, and welcome to Vista Forums.

What brand is your computer? Usually all OEM (store bought brand) computers come with a recovery partition to do a factory restore of Vista with.

My computer is a Gateway. My old computer broke and Gateway sent a refurbished computer as a replacement but it came with no software or anything...

Not sure what you are referring to in your first post. Do you think you need to reinstall Vista - or repair it?

Do you mean this fix:

http://www.logicitc.com/blog/?p=102

What happened, exactly. Please describe the symptoms and any error messages.

You will probably have a "recovery partition" which can be used to replace Vista - as you originally got it.

If you don't have any way of checking, download this:

Free Download Partition Wizard ( bootable cd download at the bottom of the link)

( some screenshots so you can see what it will look like and how to use it Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to boot computer directly to manage partition. )

Burn it to cd-r with this ( do not format the cd)

View attachment isoburn.exe.zip

Boot the cd you just made and tell us what it says.

If you want a disc that has the system repair options on it - may as well get the 7 recovery disc - works very well on Vista:

I would say contact Gateway support for a free replace OEM Vista recovery and OEM Applications and Drivers discs since they sent you a replacement computer with no recovery partition on it. With their agreement with Microsoft, they are suppose to provide a way to reinstall your legal copy of Vista that came with their computer.

All refurbished Gateways come without recovery media, however it is possible to create one via Gateway Recovery Center. If you didn't do that yet, I hope, you would still make these full Gateway recovery discs with the OS and drivers, but first you have to boot your OS.
Try to download the recovery disc, Theog provided the link in his post.
