Computer backup shotty

So a couple days ago my computer wouldn't boot up right, after trying a couple of things I decided to restore to factory settings and wipe it all down. I purchased a 1tb external hard drive and used the feature "back up files" before I restored Vista.

That took FOREVER but I finally finished and restored Vista, everything worked great and it started fine so I connected the hard drive and restored all the data. I now have a folder with all my old files. I started moving these files back and everything seems to be working fine.

Now the only problem I have is when I try to play a video file that I recovered from external hard dine then moved onto this one it will not play. I will get a warning saying VLC media player could not open this file, or Windows media player could not open this file. The ONLY way I can play it is if I copy the file then paste it (in the same location) then click on the copied version and it will play with no problems.

Thanks for your time!

Welcome to the Forum

Start off by making a restore point. Then try this:

In addition, I have included below the entire tutorial on this subject. In the event that my first suggestion does not remedy the situation you may be able to uncover a procedure that does. It seems to me however, that this is an association problem that should be remedied by the above.

Hope it works

Thanks for you quick and detailed reply!

Unfortunately both solutions did not work. After I merged the file and tried to open it again it opened with Windows Media Player and I got this error message.

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

Any ideas as to whats wrong?

Thanks again!
