Opening locked files from a Vista hard drive connected to an XP Machine

If anyone can help, I'd be grateful as I cant complete this job until I figure this one out.

My client had vista on his machine and the OS is corrupt. I'm going to wipe the hard drive and restore it with XP. Some of his folders are locked/private/protected. So he probably chose to keep files private.

I need to back up his data before I wipe the hard drive, but I cant access his my documents folder: "Access Denied". I connected his hard drive to my machine with XP Pro on it, booted to Safe Mode and logged in as Administrator. Right clicked on some of these folders and for properties I have no security tab. There's a security tab on most of his other folders but not the ones I need to back up. So I cant change ownership like you can normally do if this thing was done in XP. There is a Sharing Tab, but if I try to share it: "Access Denied" Read only and hidden are checked in the general tab and also greyed out so those values cant be changed. Is there a program out there that I can get to do this? How about something on Hiren 10.2?

Did a little brainstorming and thought I'd create an account with his name and original password on it and try to access it through that account still in safe mode. No luck -exactly the same situation. Course, I'm doing this within XP as I dont have a Vista machine around here at the moment. I also tried creating the same account and password on a Mac and got the same results as well.

I suppose I could try repairing windows on his machine using a Vista disk and then try getting back into his account and remove the restrictions then copy them off the drive then wipe it with XP.

I can certainly think outside the box, but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks for helping. -Robert from Simsbury, CT

Hi,

Have a look at this tutorial on how to bring back the security tab in Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/140723-security-properties-tab-restore-remove.html

Once you have done this, I have included a program to corrupt all permissions for the specified file or folder. DO NOT MISUSE THIS APPLICATION! Once all permissions have been removed from that folder, put some new permissions back the normal way.

The program is called takeown.exe and is simple to use from Command Prompt:

takeown.exe C:\ExampleFolder\ExampleFile.txt
takeown.exe C:\ExampleFolder\*

I think you understand now. Any problems, just post back.

Richard
