Solved Vista Recovery

Hello everyone,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN FZ11Z with Vista home premium.

I seemed to have picked up a virus which stopped me from booting into normal mode and in Safe Mode there was constant access to the hard disk, no response from the mouse or keyboard and then it just rebooted.

Start up repair couldn't find anything wrong. After trying to find a solution I decided to backup my data via the recovery DVD and do a complete system recovery.

On the second part of the process where it is installing vista, after a restart I received a black screen titled "Windows Boot Manager" telling me a critical driver was missing or corrupt. I couldn't find any answers to this anywhere, so after trying Statup Repair again (which never finishes) I decided to wipe the disk before staring a sytem recovery again. This froze for a couple of hours on 80% so I stopped it.

Now I have " The volume does not contain a recognized file system" when in the recovery console.

I did a diagnostic on the hardware at the start of all this and no problems were reported.

I have all my data, I have all the recovery disks, all I want to do is have a fresh start!!!!

Please help me to do this!!!!!

If I do this will I be able to reinstall vista? As there isn't a complete version as such, just a "system recovery" on my disks if there's nothing on my hard drive, I can't recover it!

Thanks for your reply.

I've followed all those instructions to the letter. I'm still at the point where on reinstalling Windows, Windows Boot Manager says I have missing drivers. This time the file is adpahci.sys. Surely these files should be on the Recovery Disk?

Last time I got this error the missing/corrupt file was adp94xx.sys. A coincidence or the first of many?

How do I make sure I have the new drivers? Why aren't they on the DVDs?

Thanks for all help!

I've run vaio diagnostics again. No hardware problems. I've done a hard disk check but on the c: drive, it seems like there is hd access but the test never finishes. The E: drive completes successfully.

I've formatted both drives but when I now try to re-install vista (it seems like its almost finished - I get a small pointer and high quality graphic background) I get the error:

"Windows cannot access the installation sources. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation."

I re-formatted and tried to load xp. The installation says I have no hard disk.....

I loaded avast! bart and it says the same thing......no hard disk.

Please tell me why.

I can't remember if you've run a HDD diagnostic tool.

I'm trying to find the right one. I took my HD out and it's a Fujitsu. I downloaded a diagnostic tool and it couldn't recognize anything. Are there any good generic ones?

Today I also tried to run Knoppix from the hard drive after a successful install but that came up with the error "Kernel panic - not syncing. Attepted to kill init!"

Crazy.

My Computer

Ok.

I got Ultimate boot cd. (Top CD).

I ran the Fujitsu diagnostic and yes.......it didn't pass. I wish I had used Ultimate at the start.

It's a relief.........it's like finally discovering the truth.... it's closure. I can go and buy a new hard disk and carry on with my life.

But my, haven't I learnt a lot? Another complulsory Microsoft course........

My Computer

Hello Colin.

Too bad about the HDD but as you say closure; thanks, I'm glad I could be a help.
