I have done everything i can to perform a complete pc restore, but it simply cannot be done. I did it before on my old computer running xp, and believe that vista 64bit does not have the partition. also, i have tried reinstalling. but that just reset my basic desktop settings. my issue is that I'm selling the laptop on ebay and need to wipe everything. does anyone know what i can do?

If there is no partition, you received a DVD, that serve the same purpose.

i've already done F8, Control F11, and tried using the disk. none worked. also, i've not already done a factory restore, so the other person's comment is not accurate.

I have had 2 Dells, now its a desktop xps 420. I just looked at my manual it gives the same instructions that I gave you. In addition, Dell gives a DVD that can restore.
Make sure that you boot from the DVD when you try to use it.
Go to BIOS and set boot from DVD.

i've already completely reinstalled from the dvd but it did not remove any of my files/folders. and there is absolutely nowhere i could find (after literally over one hour of looking) to pc restore with the dvd.

But I also understand this
Dell gives you a DVD that restores. If you did use the correct one and it did not restore, I think that you did not boot from that DVD. Boot from the DVD that came with the Dell, and your computer should be back like the day that you brought it.

i'm trying to upload a picture i took with my camera of what i see when i do the F8 trick, but it won't load. i don't see the option "repair my computer." i see: enable boot logging, enable low-resolution video, last known good configuration, directory services repari mode, debugging mode, disable automatic restart on system failure, disable driver signature enforcement. I've tried all of them just to see what happens and none do what i want.

when i press F12, it says 'boot menu'. the options are "hard drive", CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive, removable devices, network, diagnostics. i used the second option when i did as described before.

I cant explain this, If you boot from the DVD, and it is the DVD that came with the computer, to reset to factory specs, it should work.
