Vista fails to fully boot, restarts, black screen, unable to access bios

I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 (Vista 32bit Home Edition) that has suddenly stopped fully booting. When the power button is pressed, the appropriate keyboard/disk lights come on and the fan starts. A black screen appears and then 5-7 seconds later it shuts down and restarts. There is NO mouse cursor or blinking line in the top-left corner as some of the other forums have described - just completely black and the computer continuously restarts.

I am unable to access the BIOS or any other system options at the startup. F10, F8, F2, the ESC key, etc all do NOT work. Although, the interesting thing is that F10 and the ESC keys are the only ones that allow the computer to stay running for longer than 5-7 seconds. When these keys are pressed at the startup, the empty black screen stays "lit" and the computer stays on (no restart). The fan increases in speed (high) after a few minutes, slows down again, and this process is repeated. A hard/forced shutdown is needed to turn the computer off.

I cannot change the boot order since I'm unable to access the BIOS. Thus, my recovery disks won't work. I feel completely stuck here. ANY help or advise is greatly appreciated - particularly concerning a way to change the boot order in this situation.

The fact that the F10 and ESC keys leave it going for a bit extra tells me this is fixable.
The F10 button allows you to enter the setup facility.
The ESC button is used to change the boot order.
There is also an F12 option for your laptop.

I have located the service manual, have a look at 2.3 Troubleshooting flowcharts.

Thank you very much for this manual.

I found a very peculiar and temporary fix for the startup problem. I purchased a USB transfer cable to test whether I would be able to access any files on the computer. I figured I would hit F10 or the ESC key (preventing it from restarting but maintaining the black screen) and then hook it up to another laptop to try to see if I could access files on the hard drive. To my shock and luck, when I plugged the cable into the two computers, the computer I'm having trouble with started right up! I backed up all of my personal files on an external hard drive and then ran the recovery wizard to restore factory settings.

Unfortunately, this was not a permanent fix. The computer displays the same symptoms after the full system recovery, restarting after 5-7 seconds during the boot. The only way I can get it to startup is to hit ESC or F10 and then plug in the transfer cable into the USB port (while connected to the other computer). I ran the BIOS when it started this way and no no hard disk problems were detected.

Any other ideas of what may be causing this? I don't think it could be a registry problem or anything since the computer now has the original factory settings.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

It sounds as if your computer is trying to boot from the other computer.

Boot as before with the two computers linked but this time go into the bios to check the settings on the boot order and boot from lan.
