Solved Saving Files From Broken Computer

What I Need Help With:
I haven't had any help as of yet with the thread about the problem the computer is having, but I'm thinking I might have to do a complete restore. Before that though I need to make sure I get my files off of the computer so I don't lose them in this process.

The Problem With the Computer:
I can't get to the log in screen and I can't go into safe mode. The problem with the computer itself is that it loads up and instead of going to the log in screen it gives me a black screen with just my cursor. This was after a system restore to a date of three months back was attempted, thread here: http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/292061-black-screen-cursor-after-restore.html

Software:
Windows Vista Home Premium SP 1

What size blank cd do you recommend I use?

And on the link to the download for ubuntu, it says a CD or a usb drive. If I already have a usb drive, can I just use it instead of the cd?

Most people have used the CD, but I guess a USB would do the job; at least 1GB or better.

I would need a usb for the backup though, right?
Because I'd be using the cd for the ubuntu, and then a usb for the transfer of the files/harddrive?

My Computer

Cant you transfer via the CD?

Well on the link of the tutorial you provided it talked about getting the ubuntu started on your cd, and then getting to the point where you can access your files or your harddrive, but then this section is next: Backing Up to External USB
and that's instructing me to use a usb to transfer, right?

My Computer

Sorry misunderstood.
Yes, once you access the OS, you can backup to a usb.

Could I use the same usb I'm running the ubuntu from to backup my files?
And for getting ubuntu on the usb would I just use the imgburn and instructions the same way as described for the cd?

My Computer

I think that we are not having a meeting of the minds. You access from the Cd, then yoiu back up your stuff to the USB

Okay, I'll try that route then. You said you suggested a minimum of a 1gb cd. I have these cd's called CD-R and they're only 700mb each. Do you think that I could use one of them though?

My Computer

Based upon comments from others, at least 1 gb. You can try and if not large enough you can buy or borrow.
You can probably use several if less than 1 gb. I have never tried the process myself. Fortunately did not have the need.

After burning, when do I put the cd in my computer? Right when I trun it on, or do I go to some kind of debug or something first?

Nevermind that question I believe ubuntu is starting.

My Computer

after booting Ubuntu live CD choose "try Ubuntu " then backup ur files to USB drive or external HD or if u have multiple partition on ur HD then it will be FINE, Cox the contents of a failed partition will be there. good luck bro
