Quick Launch not opening programs - all of them

I use the Quick launch for a lot of programs and it has worked fine for years. Recently I had a couple of viruses that attacked my computer and I had to go through the exercise of ridding myself of them. That part is all good.

Now I have another small problem... ALL of my quick launch icons will not open the program ... instead I go to the "open with" pop up.

When I associate the program with the icon, it does not resolve it (the path is fine on all of the icons)...

is something missing?

Hello, keeping in mind that you had a virus at one time, it may have corrupted some files, so, i would try this out and see if they can be fixed : http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html
Please post back results, you may need to re run it up to 3 times to achieve maximum results.

I used the tool recommended in the reply and the program indicated there were no problems. I ran it five times. The problem persists.

Incidentally I have run mcafee, and a couple of other programs that are similar and there is nothing turning up there.

This question may be off topic, but here goes... if I am able to do a system restore back a week or so, there is no chance of reconstituting viruses etc that have since been removed?

Well, yes, the restore point may in fact be infected, depends on if you made a new restore point after you got cleaned up and if you have a good one to use at this time . Do you have a clean restore point ?

Yard dog... I used that malware program to get free of the viruses in the first place.... and I have run it subsequently and I am clear, it says...

Here is a another potential clue...

When I right click on the incorrectly working icons and "open" the problem persists BUT, when I "Run as Administrator"... it works correctly...

I complete the cache rebuild - no difference...

A couple of other things I am noticing...

---my desktop icons also are acting the same way.

--- icons that attempt to open an "application only" are what is effected. As opposed to icons/shortcuts that I have set up that accrue to a specific file within an application - like a specific MS word file or URL destination in Firefox.

Do this for me please. Try in safe mode, and use another user account, admin account if possible , if not make a new admin account and try that one. Then try new admin account in normal mode. I am just wondering if the user account is corrupted somehow .
