system recovery (wireless not enabled)

Hi (sorry, wasn't sure which section to post this in) we're trying to restore a hp g60 214em vista home premium laptop. Allsorts going wrong with it! When I open Recovery Manager it asks me what I want to do, so I click system recovery. The laptop then restarts and the screen eventually comes on to start the recovery to factory settings. BUT...the wireless button doesn't turn blue for some reason (it works fine when the laptop starts up normally) and it says before you continue with the recovery, to make sure that all external devices have been taken out and that the wireless is enabled! No idea how to get it to come on? Any help would be brilliant, thanks

Trying a disk check at the min to see if that brings up any problems?
I don't want to risk system recovery til I can get the wireless light enabled..

Hello vista890 and welcome to the forums

Have you got your files backed up? Can you access safe mode? Have you got a Vista DVD?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I don't need to back any files up so that's ok. I'm not quite sure what safe mode is (can do a few basic things that I've learnt along the way but not come across this before) and the laptop didn't come with a vista dvd.

Just started laptop in safe mode with networking
The wireless light is blue..just can't understand why it won't turn blue when it restarts for the system recovery
Do I need to do anything whilst it's in safe mode?

Does your internet work OK when you're using safe mode with networking? I just wanted to see whether the problem lies with your wireless card or not :)

Have you tried going wired in System Recovery?

Yep the internet works fine in safe mode.
Wired from the modem or router? I tried an Ethernet cable from the router to the laptop but that didn't make a difference...

I would try opening the run box and typing msconfig
Hide all Microsoft services and then disable what's left
Try restarting if that works enable some of the services
Restart ,still working, enable more etc until you find the service that is buggy.

I've seen your thread at the HP Forum about this. Did you follow the instructions in the link provided by JohnTS4all ? It states that you should power the system on, press the wireless button to turn ON the wireless switch, reboot, press F11 to access Recovery Options and then follow the given instructions (which you should also find in your manual).

When I load up the laptop the wireless automatically comes on. I've tried loading it up, the wireless has come on, then reboot and pressed F11 but the wireless light then stays orange..

Has anyone else got any idea what could be wrong? I really don't want to continue with the recovery until I can get the wireless enabled as it will just fail :(

My laptop has a switch on the side to disconnect or connect to a wireless network. You might check that. However, you said it connects to the internet in safe mode so I'm just grasping at straws.

I just reread the post by Dwarf. My post about the switch was a big "duh".

Did you try the clean boot suggested by ilikefree?

Since it works in safe mode, it seems that the basic driver used there is being replaced by Windows.

I'm not really sure how to do what ilikefree suggested? I'm not the best with computers!

Can I just emphasise that there is nothing wrong with the wireless/internet connect with daily use of the laptop, this is not why I am wanting to do a system recovery. It's only when it reboots to begin the process that the wireless light just will not turn blue!

The process ilikefree wants you to do is called a clean boot.

I'm assuming you're using classic view.

click on Start, then Search. Type msconfig.exe. Under the Services tab, click the box that says "hide all Microsoft.....". Then click on the other box that says disable all other services. Under the Startup tab, click on the box that says to disable all Services. Reboot. Can you get to the internet. If yes, repeat the above and enable all Services. Reboot. Can you get to the internet. If yes, repeat the above and with all Services enabled, enable a few of the Startup items and reboot. If you lose the internet, then you can narrow down which Startup item it is bit by bit. Keep doing this until you've find out which Startup item is causing the problem.

If the first clean boot process doesn't work to restore the internet connection, run msconfig.exe again and restore everything back to the way it was. Even if it does work, you should do this and figure out how to fix the offending Startup item.
