Solved Reformatted, Keyboard & Mouse don't work after BIOS screen

As the title says i reformatted my computer yesterday to give it a fresh start. Keyboard and Mouse were both working just fine until after i reformatted & reinstalled Windows. Keyboard now responds at ONLY the BIOS screen, and if i use F8 to open the boot list it will go to the list but freeze the keyboard. Both seem to still be getting power as the lights on the Mouse still come on and the Keyboard lights come on at first boot.
How can i fix this? I have no access to safe mode / cmd, and I'm not sure if i can use them in Setup. I haven't tried yet. They are both PS/2 so i really don't understand this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if there's a IRQ conflict. You could check the BIOS.

I've been looking up how to access the BIOS of this computer and supposedly it cannot be done.

I have an HP, not sure on the exact model number but I've read that HP's have a locked BIOS.

I was able to get the mouse working just long enough to do the "First Time Setup" and got into the computer, opened up device manager and noticed there was nothing there mentioning a keyboard. No errors though. About thirty seconds later the mouse completely cut out again. Still getting power, just randomly not working.

Also i tried to go into Setup and it won't accept any key press on the BIOS screen now.
Mouse is again randomly working for short periods of time. I got it working once to finish the setup by doing a power cycle but since that no go.

I don't know that their locked, just a roundabout method to get there. Most just use delete during the post. I'll check my HP tomorrow.

Well I'm not sure if that's the way in or not but I tried that a moment ago.
So far I've tried these keys at BIOS splash;
F1-F7 : no response
F8 : 1/10 it actually goes to the boot list with safe mode and all but i can't do anything
F9 : no reponse
F10 : supposed to be setup but no response
F11 : Supposed to be System Recovery menu but no response most of the time, if it DOES go to the menu the mouse works just long enough to confirm keyboard language as English then it freezes too.
F12: no response
DEL : the first time i tried it said "Windows is loading files" as if it were going to recovery mode then just went black screen and restarted itself, no response since.

At this point I've gotten the mouse to work twice, Can't seem to get it to work again.
The keyboard itself seems to be still getting power as the lock lights come on at first boot, but then basically nothing after that. I've gotten the keyboard to respond one time for about two minutes then it cut out.

I tried to confirm which model it is and all i could find was "HP Pavillion Slimline".
Hope that helps.

It would help a great deal to fill in system specs. Under Quick Links there's Edit System Specs. Saves a lot of time people asking what kind of keyboard, mouse, HP model etc..

Was Vista pre-installed or did you put Vista on the machine from an install disc? If it's pre-installed and the mouse and keyboard are wireless maybe there's a driver that Windows doesn't install by default.

In any case you can look up your HP model number here and get drivers and some other software:

HP Business Support Center

The people on that board are volunteers like here. It's not paid support. They just all own HP PCs.
Business class machines used to have way more horse power back in the day when the board was created. That's why it says Business in the name.

My apologies for not being able to provide further information about the specs but i literally have no means of checking it right now or I'd post the DXdiag or something.

It has Vista Home Premium 32bit,
It came with this OS, and it has the spare HDD for recovery/reinstall/etc.
Dual core processer, AMD.
3 gig of ram,
an ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card
PS/2 (cheap but reliable.) mouse & keyboard
& everything else is stock.

As for the mobo, I couldn't tell you anything about it.

The mouse & keyboard are both wired via PS/2, no USB adapter or anything like that.
I did a bit of googling this morning at found that CCC with ATI cards has a possibility of causing this due to a glitch where the program tried to load up ATI drivers for other things but that's supposedly one of the rarest glitches for this card.

Quick update. The mouse decided to work this time on boot up and using onscreen keyboard i started the command "sfc /scannow" and it just finished reporting that it found problems but could not fix them.

Also more info about the PC for you guys. Screenshots.

Device Manager : http://i.imgur.com/DaRr0.jpg

I noticed no keyboard entry in the Device Manager. I assume that missing drivers could be causing the keyboard issue but no idea what could have caused the mouse issue. It's still working for now but last time i got the mouse working it stopped responding after a minute.

The error in Device Manager is simply my graphics card. Haven't re-installed the drivers for it just yet.

I'm now getting errors with Catalyst Control Center. It crashes immediately when i try to use it with a window popping up saying "Catalyst Control Center : Host application stopped working."
This was one of the reasons i originally reinstalled Windows, I couldn't figure out how to fix this. I'm not sure if it's involved or not but it's a reoccurring error.

Just solved the problem.

For future reference if anyone ever has this problem I fixed it by using HP Recovery Manager to reinstall the original keyboard drivers, then did a power cycle. I unplugged the keyboard, booted the PC, plugged the keyboard in right before the BIOS screen, and it started working again.

Glad you got it fixed. Just for future info that HP support site has the original drivers that came with the system as well as any software updates since you purchased. A Hotmail email is fine for registering. About the only thing you can't download free for software would be recovery discs as they can't give away windows. But all the other software is there to be had. Plus if you get a weird HP-only problem you can find out some stuff there you may not get anywhere else.

Also sometimes your question just sits. It doesn't have as much traffic as here. Nothing's perfect. :)
