CD/DVD Drive not showing up in Vista on ASUS Laptop

Hey all,

Common problem I know, but no solution so far. Here's what's happening:

No DVD/CD drive showing up in my computer, won't auto run

Here's what I've done:

Made sure auto run is on

Assumed disk-drive failure: install virtual drives, they also won't show up

Run Microsoft fix it from:
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Regedit: remove UpperFilters, lowerfilters not there, reboot still nothing:
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Diskmgmt.msc: Change letter of drive, autorun pops up disk! Then the disk disappears and says drive /f: etc can not be found, tried multiple letters.

For some reason it seems windows is automatically taking away the drive letters I assign, any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Robert Wright

Did you select "AutoPlay" from the Control Panel? In this dialog, you are given a multitude of settings to control how Windows behaves when a disc is inserted.

But from what you're describing, Windows isn't even seeing the device correctly. When it appears in Disk Management, what drive letter does it appear as? It should be the first available letter that follows the hard disk partition(s). Or is it showing up without a drive letter assignment?

There is also the possibility that the CD/DVD driver has become corrupted. If it comes up in the devices list, you should be able to perform an "update driver software". If that doesn't work, you could try uninstalling it so that when you reboot, the "new hardware" wizard is launched to set up the device from scratch.

Cytherian,

In Disk Management it shows up with no letter, and after assigning one (the first available is D: it gets assigned for a moment, and auto-run even pops up but then the number disappears and after granting the program admin access it says the disk drive D: could not be found (other letters have been tried as well)

Thank you for your response, unfortunately still no luck though :( I'm really stumped on this one.

The drives do show up in device manager, but they're drivers are all the best available, and after uninstalling and rebooting the same driver is installed and same issue exists.

Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Well that's peculiar, Robert. The good thing is that it shows up, but for Windows to not assign a drive letter... that's odd. Did you check the drive in the Device Manager list, to see if there's any flagging for a driver error?

Does the unit show a power light, or at least make a noise when your computer starts up? If you press the eject button, does the door open? And what happens if you insert a CD or DVD and close the door? Does it try to do anything with it or just sit there idle?

As a last resort, I would pull the drive out and check for the brand and model number, then seek out drivers to download from the Internet. Then install those and see if it solves the problem. You could also uninstall the existing device driver in case it doesn't work the first time, as sometimes the existing one doesn't get replaced.

Sounds like you have already done what I would recommend

press Windows key and R
Type regedit, and then click OK.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer

It's kind of curious. Microsoft disabled AutoRun for everything except optical drives via an update to Vista and Win 7. I would assume that this update provides the exception. Is your Vista up to date?

^ Trouble with autorun is the least of his worries... there's no drive letter assignment, so he can't even access the device through Windows Explorer. Kind of unusual situation.

Hey all,

Thanks for the responses, this is a very peculiar problem indeed.

I have tried multiple times assigning the drive a number, and it assigns it briefly, the disk will pop up, but for some reason then disappears again shortly after, and the drive letter is unassigned.

I have ruled out a hardware issue, not only does the drive appear to be in perfect working order, I have also installed virtual drives usn Daemon Tools with the same issues on those.

The regedit has not worked at this point in time, though I'll check back again for the Lowerfilters.

Thanks all, and any more ideas please keep them coming, this has been bugging me for some time now.

I think you should disconnect the drive physically from the mobo while shut down and restart Windows. Then shut down and reconnect the drive (I'm suggesting this because I don't know if your system is set up for a hot swap) and reboot. Windows should reinstall your drive.
