Solved Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEASE!

I have been getting this error message when booting up my machine:

"Could not load or run (file) specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove it from the registry"

I have gone to registry editor and found the file which is in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows tried to delete it and got the following error:

"Unable to delete all specified values."

I have also tried to remove it using autoruns and got this message:

"Error changing item state: Access is denied."

In both cases, I have been running these programs as administrator.

I have also tried a couple of third-party cleaners, but those have failed to solve the problem as well.

If it helps any, the file is a .cmd file.

Thank you in advance to anyone that sees this thread and can give this frustrated soul a helping hand!

Hi Allan,

No luck...I ran the sfc/scannow in safe mode and I still get the registry error popup after I rebooted...any other ideas?

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

I have removed viruses, but this window has been popping up every time I have rebooted the computer the last six plus months. Truth be told, my system works great but this thing is really more of a nuisance more than anything else.

I also have no idea what the computer is trying to run. I tried a web search for the particular file name and got no help there. The file name is mslayv.cmd. The filepath also shows it to be in a temp folder I cannot locate...

Have you removed a virus lately?
Do you know what program the computer is trying to run?

What's the file path? Have you tried an advanced search which includes hidden files and folders?

Yes, tried an advanced search, no luck. Here is the complete file path:

C:\Users\Ryan\LOCALS~1\Temp\mslayv.cmd

To all that have responded to this point...I appreciate all the help that has been given and continue to get! Hope we can finally tackle this one soon!

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

The file is a .cmd "batch" file. It should contail plain text with commands. Can you open the file in Notepad? If so please paste the contents. There's also the chance something creates the file, runs it, then deletes it. Could be malware dynamically creating this batch file.

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

Have a look at msconfig to see if a startup entry is hiding there.
You may have deleted the file when you have done a computer clean up (as the file was in the temp directory).
The filename does not get any hits anywhere.
Try removing the registry entry in safe mode (if you can do it in safe mode).

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

I'm unable to find the file when I explore Windows looking for it...it's as if the file name doesn't exist at all. Unable to pick up any malware when running a virus scan as well...

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

Took a look at msconfig, but didn't see anything there that would directly relate to the file in question...

I also tried removing the entry using regedit in safe mode, but still encounter the same error messages...

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

I think this file has long since been deleted from your computer. You still have a registry entry and "start up" or "services" is attempting to start it when you boot.

Have you installed God Mode? Some tools there that may help you locate and destroy this.

Another possibility is to

Open Task manager (using Cltrl+Alt+Delete)
- Click on menu File ->Open task
- Type regedit and Enter to open Registry Editor
- Search for the key word mslayv.cmd
- Delete this key and close Registry Editor
- Restart Windows Explorer and everything is back to normal :)

Has the name of this mysterious cmd file ever been found? I'm just curious about the exact filename.

Oh yeah, I remember now. Never got a loot at the contents though? Did you try doing a Dir in a command prompt rather than Explorer?

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

Tried running it through the command prompt...no luck there either...

How would I get to the raw contents of the file for you to look at?...getting that is a little above my Windows knowledge...

I did put a God Mode folder on my documents and took a look at Software Explorer...and the file is in the registry for current user, the name that is put on the file simply reads N/A... and is classified as "not yet classified"

However I cannot remove or disable the file from automatically uploading and that is what is giving me the alert every time I boot...

Thanks again for all your suggestions, hopefully this thing will be tackled eventually...

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

Was able to locate the file looking on Software Explorer on Windows Defender...shows it loads when current user (that's me) logs in...shows as N/A and not yet classified, does not give me the option of removing or diabling the file (those buttons are grayed out)

What happens when you try to delete the registry entry? You might have to change permissions for the Key that it is located in.

Re: Could not load or run (file) pop up window at boot up...NEED HELP TO REMOVE PLEAS

If the location is within a subkey, it might be necessary to change permissions for one or more subkeys. Can you give a screen shot of the key and it's subkeys?
