Solved Fresh Install of Vista automatic web log in?

Hi Thank you for looking.

I have just formatted my harddrive and then reinstalled vista home premium from scratch.

During installation updates were downloading automatically without me logging in to my router.

After the updates completed successfully, I tried opening a browser and found that im able to surf the net no problems, yet when i check my router it asks me to enter the password.

Why am I automatically connected? Is this totally normal or is something amiss?

Do you have an ethernet cable plugged in? Are there any routers within range without password protection on?

Yes it is connected by ethernet cable, and no there aren't any routers without passwords anywhere around.

I have just tried disconnecting the ethernet cable and my connection failed. I feel a bit silly that I overlooked such an obvious test to make:rolleyes:

When I got my router a few years ago, I installed the software that came with it and went through the whole process to set it up.

Subsequently, I had to reinstall Vista on a new hard drive. Strangely, the router connected automatically to the internet, even though I hadn't reinstalled the software, just as it did for you. In fact, I haven't been able to install the software. The router information must be stored in it's firmware when the software is first installed, unless I'm missing something.

As he stated he had ethernet plugged in. Also at the time of his post it wouldn't connect wirelessly because he hadn't given it the password yet. Windows will always make an ethernet connection automatically provided that it is a working connection and the device isn't disabled.

Hey, I hope you're keeping warm tonight.

I just thought it was interesting because NetGear made a big deal of installing the software when I made the first connection but I didn't have to reinstall it when I reinstalled Vista on a new hard drive. It was on a ethernet connection when I reinstalled Vista and it worked (and has worked) wirelessly on my other systems. Didn't have to give it any passwords or anything else. I know all the information is on the internet but I don't know how it would know to go there or where to go. That's why I mentioned the firmware.

You do not need a password to connect to the internet through the router, if connected by cable, you may need to enter a passkey if logging into the router wirelessly,[ this is a good idea as it prevents unauthorised users from accessing your internet connection].

The reasoning for this is quite simple to connect to the router by ethernet you need physical access to the device, so extra security is not required, connecting wirelessly can be done from outside your property so the extra security of a wireless key is a good idea in security


It is absolutely normal to be asked for a login and password when accessing the actual router, this gives you access to the settings of the router, allowing you to control the functionality of the router.

The defaults for the particular router will be in the documentation that came with it, and also is normally printed on the base of the actual router, alongside the default Passkey for wireless

The defaults for many popular routers are available online so it is always good practice to change all of the default settings

Thanks guys, it did strike me as strange but then on reflection it makes perfect sense.

Still, its puzzling that your new install connected over wifi automatically.. Maybe it is an open network, or you have left the password off?

Hopefully this will answer this question for anyone else who experiences it :)
