I really don{t know. I haven't been able to install anymore updates since October 2015. Each time I tried to update, I get a sign that says "Error Code 80070005. Windows Update encountered and unknown error". But this problem with my black screen started today.

dchaviano, Your problem sounds like what the rest of us have going on with update KB3140527. Perhaps this update was installed with autoupdate as mine was. I didnt realize what had happen either. I came in my office the other morning and had black screen. I tried to reboot and just got the same thing, after entering my PW i got the welcome screen then nothing but black screen like you.

What you should do is reboot your system in safe mode and do a system restore back to a day before your system went black screen. This will remove the update and you should boot back up ok. Suggest that you hide this update until someone figures out what is going on with it.

Good luck!

Glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing such a problem and wonder if there are more of us out there. Two days ago, I had occasion to re-boot my system which is a private stand alone PC running Windows Vista and not password protected. The system went through its usual routine but then presented me with a black blank screen with the white cursor able to move around. Since then I have tried all sorts of things to return to as was but without success. I note the solution proposed on this forum to such a problem but when in safe mode I cannot access system restore as it tells me that system restore is turned off and cannot be accessed in safe mode. As I can't get into normal mode to turn same on, I'm beat and wonder if anyone has any other suggestions as frustration is setting in. :sa:

Welcome to Vista Forums Davidfi. It should be possible to turn off Microsoft Security Essentials 4.9 in safe mode by unticking the newly-added Administrator -> Turn on this app on the Settings tab (see screenshot at MSE update to 4.9 - Security | DSLReports Forums). It should then be possible to log on normally (although without any antivirus protection), according to Windows Vista x64 BKSOD after login or no access in normal mode - suspect MSE - Windows Vista. Then you could either try to get system restore turned on or try to uninstall MSE 4.9. MSE 4.8 can still be downloaded, or you could install a different antivirus.

Although Microsoft always recommended automatic updating, this problem strongly suggests that a setting such as "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" is a better idea. I have avoided the 4.9 update altogether myself.

It sounds like two restarts might be needed in some cases to log on normally after disabling MSE 4.9. Your next question logically might be how to uninstall MSE? I've only used it for a year and haven't ever uninstalled it myself, but someone running Vista recently reported success here: Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Community.

Hi Vistaar,

Took your advice via Screenshot MSE update to 4.9 - Security and was able to switch off the anti virus protection and thereafter log on normally to find that the problem was cured and all is now well. I've left off the anti virus protection as I have both Avast and Ad Aware running which do the same job so no worries there. Appears part of the problem was trying to upgrade to Google Chrome given that Vista no longer supports that. The cure took me back to plain old google and all has been well since.

Many thanks again

David:)

I'm glad you are out of the woods, but now I find myself wondering whether everyone who had this problem was running more than one antivirus (which neither Microsoft nor Avast nor I would recommend), or whether everyone had Chrome installed...
