great info there Roy / pizzaman.........;)

DDR2 still has plenty of ''get up & go'', so i'd stick with that....... if your budget is tight, intel will also be your best bet for the money, AMD make some decent chips now, but there are some seriously cheap C2D's out there, which are excellent performers..

let us know what you decide..:)

i'll tell you why shall i.....:sarc:

clock for clock intel chips out perform AMD.... known fact.

if your on a budget you can get a blisteringly fast intel rig for pennies.....

you can buy an E2180 for £40, 2ghz with 1mb cache, the equivalent AMD offering is left in the dust with this chip & thats stock....

add in a 1.5ghz OC on the 2180 & it will out perform most of AMD's ''black edition'' chips...
FOR 40 QUID!!

for instance.....an Athlon X2 5000+ does 9 operations per clock cycle @ 2600MHz
the E2180 does 12 ops per cycle @ 2000MHz

the E2180 is slightly more efficient here, in regards to the clocks.....

once OCed ....the discussions not worth having

OP.....you could pay the extra & get the phenom that pizzaman keeps pushing as the best thing since sliced bread, & it will out perform the 2180, but take that extra cash (which is still less than what it costs for a phenom) & put it on an intel E7200, a 2.5ghz 45nm dual core with 3mb cache while this only has 2 cores it still out performs a stock phenom 9550....again factor in a 1ghz OC & the intel will destroy anything AMD have..

lol, ahh.... the Phenom II 955.

why the bloody hell would you buy one of those, you can get a Q9550 for the same price, as i said ''clock for clock'' intel is more efficient.

the Phenom II 955 BE is made to compete with the Q9550, but the thing is that the Phenom II 955 BE @ 3.2GHz matches the Q9550 @ 2.83GHz. Both are over-clock able, but the same clock on both, say 3.5GHz, the Q9550 will out perform the Phenom II. :sarc:

the Q9550 WILL DO 4.5GHZ ON AIR, & its got a 12mb cache....add to that the Q9550 only draws 95w compared to the Phenoms 125w.

so my point still stands.....

anything else you wanna add..??

Well, here we go again. In addition to Skunksmash, the AMD processors were good and out performed the Intel years, yeeeeaaaaars ago...... but novadays, the Intel CPUs are more efficient, have more L2 cache, consume less power and run cooler which is good for notebooks and for desktops as well, and the most important factor....they cost far less.

Glad to see my Q6600 is still nearly at the top, I would suggest buying a modest chip and with the money you save buy a better graphics card or invest in a slightly better mobo.

When It comes to benchmarking MOBO`s have have such a large inpact, so lets not forget them. I bet between the 3 of us we could design a killer rig.:D. If we didn`t kill each other first.:p

im done discussing this with you......

if you really belive ''clock for clock'' has no relavence in relation to AMD & Intel, there's really no hope for you.

you need to open your eyes & actually do some research before you take on a subject

I changed my mind on the fact of buying a built-in desktop :)
But now, something else's on my mind... I might need a laptop, 'cus my parents got divoreced, etc. etc.
&nd I'll need one to use VB.net and stuff like that.
But, now, I'm looking for a cheap one, that's not too expensive ('cus otherwise my dad might not want to buy it for me :p)
But i also would like it to be capable of running some games...
I found 3 laptops on Compare Gaming Laptops Custom-Built For PC Gamers - Alienware
But because you have to/ can customize it and stuff, it always becomes expensive and stuff...
could you guys help me out?
