Perfect disk versus Diskeeper

Hi,

I have both installed (trial version) and cannot really decide which one to buy.

My mind says Perfect disk. Anyone having experience with both defragmenters?

Well i havent used Perfect disk but IMO the background defragging on Diskeeper is very good (and maybe the best around !).

I suggest you use both for a few days and then decide

Well Diskeeper is cheaper, something to consider.

I uses Auslogics, good, but the entire drive is done, while i prefer only do to the C: partition every 2 days, the other partitions only once in a while.

^While you're at it ,do try out O & O Defrag.
havent tried it (yet) but it has got very Good Reviews.

I have used both, (infact, O&O too) as mentioned in one of the other defrag threads here. My personal preference is Diskeeper > O&O > perfectdisk. The biggest advantage that DK has over the other two is its low system usage, and its excellent automatic defragmentation mode. It's also pretty easy to set up and use.

PD doesnt have the autodefrag function, but O&O may have it, I dont exactly recall, because I tried out quite a while ago. But DK's autodefrag, as Asky mentioned above, is truly the best of the lot..very unintrusive, but gets to work whenever you are not using the PC and it has idle resources on tap.

I also suggest that the best thing would be to try out both on your particular system extensively, and then decide for yourself.

Make sure you look at TOTAL resource usage used by the products, once the drive is completely defragmented (i.e. is the product actually doing anything constructive). Also check free space consolidation, a critical component of a defragger. Also check the prices for full-featured products.

Well guys,

O & O Defrag.

Is a nono so it seems. I downloaded it, installed it (or tried to install it) and then the program says : "You need WIndows 2000 or higher".....and that while i am on Vista64 like most of the guys here.....

Strange.

Anyway i will try out Diskeeper versus Perfect Disk.

it strikes me that (but i may be wrong) in Diskeeper one can auto-defrag once a week or an a specific date.
With Perfect Disk one can say "defrag every 2 days".

Perfect disk asked me yesterday to do a defrag of the system files (a shutdown is needed for this).

What strikes me (strike 2) is that today Perfect disk asks me the same....

Needless to say i do not like the program to act like that.

ok just analysed the C: partition again (with PF Raxco), since this program said "Perfect disk recommends performing an offline defragmentation pass of your system files based on metadata fragmentation. Right after i analyse again .....guess what PF says exactly the same. So bad point for PF.

Also when you say in PF that defrag should start at 3 pm, it does NOT start because when you are on password it does not start.

You can overcome this by "wakeup from hibernation".
(option is located under configuration /advanced configuration / power options)
But then your computer does not come on password, ok if you want this. This is purely info for other possible Raxco buyers.

PerfectDisk does allow once a week or on a specific date. Or twice a week, etc. Diskeeper runs all the time. An analyze only analyzes, it does not defragment the drive, so until the offline is done to defragment the sytem files, it will continue to say it's needed.

Well Jabusamra,

maybe i did explain badly:

Perfect disk (not Diskeeper) continues to say that system files need a defragmentation "over and over again". So when i do say to go ahead with it, the computer shuts down, defrags the system files and restarts.

But when i analyse again, it says to defrag again the system files ? SO?

In Perfect disk you can defrag every 2 days.
Do not know for Diskeeper yet. I only started it manually. It should start tomorrow morning at 7PM.

So i will know tomorrow.

Jabu, we can continue forever here. I was only talking of Perfect disk what it does and not does. Or keep saying what should be done, when it is done.

I never said anything about Diskeeper and system files.

Well Perfect Disk ran this morning when i changed my black color cartridge of the HP 3500. As said in previous posts PD does not start when system is on password. Since i run Raid5 with Scsi drives, running PD while using the pc does not slow down, at least not noticable.

Now PD says nothing about system files. So i ran Diskeeper right after, then analyze with P.Disk.

So here is the difference between Raxco and Diskeeper:

P.D. says "Perfect Disk recommends performing a "SMARTPlacement" defragmentation pass based on free space fragmentation.

So i find this interesting. Right now my preference goes to Perfect Disk for this reason.

Anyone in favor of Diskeeper, please let us know.

i said that AUSLOGICS does NOT defrag a partition, only the full drive. My bad, it dos defrag ONE partition.

This is interesting. I dont know if smartplacement is of any use if you modify/delete the files that are smartplaced. Will you have to defragment again immediately? I tried to google for more information, and an interesting thread elsewhere came up

Anyway, I like the diskeeper automatic functionality which beats manual scheduling by far, so DK still has my vote.

Diskeeper will always be defragging again, immediately - it never stops, whether files are deleted/modified or not. You should also check out free space consolidation and near-full disk environments. DK does not defragment all metadata and has limited free space consolidation, IMO.

i like also the automatic defrag of DK and for that i would easily turn to DK, but Perfect Disk says to you when the system files need to be defraged (at boot time) and DK does this not. Since i only shut down my computer once in a while (can well be not in a month), it is nice to be informed that your system files need a defrag.

So Dk defrags auto, but says nothing on the system files subject.
PF defrags whenever you want, like every day or every 2 days, but informs you how your system files are.

My trial version of PD is over in 3 days, so i will still have time to test DK further for another 3 weeks, then i wil hopefully make the right decision.

I am not 100% sure, but I think the DK auto defrag mode should automatically defrag all the files that can be defragged when windows is running. If you schedule a boot-time defrag, DK will defrag your system files too (those that cannot be defragged when Windows is running). You can also set the $MFT defrag in the configuration options.

I think you can email DK or PD customer support for your specific questions before you buy. Better to confirm that your requirements are met before you spend your money!

how do you explain that PF says frequently that system files need a run and that DK does not do this? Never (while obviously necessary) did DK indicate this. So?

Jabu you are always talking about the system files....why is this?
