Music Link in start menu

Soulfinger

New Member
I have a stupid amount of MP3's so I store them in my slave drive which is a lot bigger than the main drive.

The question I asked myself is can I link the Music link to the MP3 folder in the D drive which was easily done with the properties by right clicking the Music and altering the location of the folder.

So now when I hover over the music in the start menu it shows a long list of MP3’s which I don’t mind.

The thing that is annoying is that if I click the Music link it doesn’t go to the folder like the others in the start menu i.e. Document & Pictures. I have to right click then click open.

I bet the first thing you think is what a lazy bas!$rd lol? It’s Just weird the fact it doesn’t work the same way as the other links in the start menu.

Another thing I would like to do is rename the Music link if that is possible?

Hi Soulfinger,

You might consider restoring the default location for the C:\Users\(username)\Music folder and just create a shortcut to the music folder on the D drive and place it in the C:\Users\(username)\Music folder. This way you do not have the extremely long list, and the D drive folder opens in a separate windows when you click on the shortcut. Plus, you can name the shortcut anything.

I noticed that some users folders will open in a separate window when you click on them while others will have to be right clicked, but they all still display as a menu from the Start menu main Username folder. I suppose it's a quirk considering you can choose to have them display as a link or menu in the Start menu Customize options.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Soulfinger

I did much the same thing as you but
when I click on the "music" link in the
start menu the file opens.
It might be because I don't have the "hover
to show list option" thing going, could that be the difference.

So now when I hover over the music in the start menu it shows a long list of MP3’s which I don’t mind.
The thing that is annoying is that if I click the Music link it doesn’t go to the folder like the others in the start menu i.e. Document & Pictures. I have to right click then click open.

Maybe it's worth a try ???

Thanks for the quick replies. That solved it Shawn! I just changed the Music to “Display as link” in customize start menu. should have thought of that myself.
Hope that helps you to Ted.

And the Music name changed automatically to what i wanted!!! must have been my telepathic powers?

Another thing can I add my D drive to the start menu as well’ I mean I can add it to the bit on the left the white bit but would be nice to have it on the fancy glass bit... Sorry for being very technical there?

Don't have a location option on the right click of the hard Drive.
I’m sure this can be done just need to look into it. When I do I will post it.

Soulfinger,

Yes, there is a way to Pin the D drive to the Start menu. You will need to enable the option to allow a folder to be pinned to the Start menu first. This will show you how:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/98613-start-menu-pin-folder.html

Afterwards, in Computer, hold down the Shift key and right click on the D drive and click Pin to Start Menu. It will now be pinned to the Start menu on the left side.

Thanks for the reply Shawn. I meant pin it to the black bit, is that possible?

the method works to pin it to the white bit but I had already had a link there with the method of dragging the Drive to the start menu.

alot simpler but it works just the same.

Cheers.

Sorry Soulfinger. There is no way to add it to the right dark side of the Start menu. :(

You would have to use some 3rd party program like Stardock WindowBlinds to be able to customize Vista like that.

Oh well! Cheers anyway Shawn for looking into it. I had window blinds for XP and don't recall a feature where you could do that but maybe in their new version you can.

Not too bothered to be honest it's ok with it in the white bit.

Is there may be a way in using one of the other folders and changing that to the desired location of my choice? I.e. the favourite’s link.

I know I could just change the location but not sure if it will upset anything?
Thought I would ask you first in case the machine explodes!!!...lol
Thanks again.

Hello Soulfinger, I know it has been a while for this thread,
but I found out more about this.

Another thing can I add my D drive to the start menu as well’ I mean I can add it to the bit on the left the white bit but would be nice to have it on the fancy glass bit... Sorry for being very technical there?

Cheers!

I just did a reinstall from the recovery D: partition on my OEM machine.
I was pleased to discover that it did not reformat my M:\Media partition
when it reformatted C:\ to reinstall the OS. IT did reletter it to E:\Media though.

Anyway I wanted to recreate the (right side) Start Menu shortcut to my now
E:\Media\Music file. I must have inadvertently clicked on just E:\Media instead
of E:\Media\Music.

I am real happy with the outcome! When I click on the short cut the
entire E:\Media partition opens.
Is this what you wanted to be able to do?
Or did you want to access a whole different HDD with it?

Let me know something!

Sorry for the late reply Ted. yeah it is what I wanted but would I need to format the drive to achieve what you managed?

Hey Soulfinger,

No problem on the reply. :)

No you don't have to do a reinstall. I just mentioned that to say why I tried it again.
Just use this step by step provided to me by Dzomlija below.
Just substitute "your info" where applicable.

I'm guessing your Partition is "<Storage D:>"? Do the following:
  1. Click the "Start Orb"
  2. Right-click on "Documents", then select "Properties"
  3. Click the "Location" tab
  4. Click the "Move..." button
  5. In the "Select a Destination" window, browse to the Partition "<Storage D:>". The destination folder should preferably NOT be a drive root folder.
  6. Click "Select Folder"
  7. Click "Apply"
  8. Wait for Windows to move the existing contents (if any) of the previous location. If you get any messages that a file exists in the destination (such as "desktop.ini", etc), you (may or may not) want to allow the copy to overwrite the existing file.
  9. When the move is complete, click "OK"
The "Documents" icon on the Start Menu will now open to "<Storage D:>".
This technique will also work for the following user profile "folders":
  • Contacts
  • Desktop
  • Documents
  • Downloads

Nice one! Was so simple? The only problem is that I like the use of the Documents, Pictures link in the start menu.
The only link in the start menu I can see that can be used for my partition is the favourite’s link and that can only be displayed as a menu.
Thanks again for sussing this out. Least I know it’s possible.
