File Sharing between XP Home and Vista Ultimate x64

I am having problems getting my shared folders on my XP Home machine to show up on my Vista Ultimate 64 cpu. I see my XP Home machine in the Network Map, but the only thing that I am seeing from that cpu is my DLNA servers. From my XP computer I am able to see both the folders I am sharing and the folders the Vista cpu is sharing. I have only 1 account on both cpus that are named the same and have the same password. I am running a Netopia router/modem from Qwest running the QM01-7.7.4r10 firmware version. I have tried disabling my firewall on both ends. I have everything turned on in Network and Sharing Center except password protection, but have tried it both on and off. My XP Home has all the most recent updates (SP3, etc...). I am also up to date on all my Vista stuff except the "Group Policy Preferance Client Side Extensions" optional update. My router is seing both computers as being in the LAN. Attatched is a screenshot of the network map.

I just realized a workaround for all those fighting file sharing issues... and if you are trying to share printers I have one solution...put your printer on a Vista box. I realized tonight that all I wanted to do was share files. And how is that most commonly done? FTP. I downloaded and installed FileZilla Server on the XP box and in Vista you can map a FTP server as a network drive, therefore no hassle network going through standard port 21.

You have to install the printer drivers on both Vista and XP. The printer works fine attached to XP

I fixed it praise JESUS. I have 2 XP pcs and 1 vista. The fix was to install the xp hotfix on ALL xp computers. Then it works. I first did it with just one pc and vista could not see them on the network. Soon as I installed it on both and rebooted success.

Only explanation is if 1 xp pc does it not have LLTD installed it must block it from the others somehow. Please try this fix and I hope it works for you. :)

Hi all,

Just as an addendum to this ...

one workaround I have found to work is in the vista search bar type the address of the XP share in the format \\xpcomputername\sharename and you should see the XP share.

Often in fact if you type just the \\xpcomputername\ part, available shares will display in the file list above the search bar

This should also work in the location bar in explorer

Hope this helps
