Internet problem after installing vista 64 bit, Unidentified network, limited/noconne

Hey everybody. I just installed an OEM windows vista home premium onto my computer so that I could take advantage of my 6GB ram. Unfortunately I don't know too much about building systems and I have an internet problem.

After I installed the OS, when I plug my computer into my router, I always recieve "unidentified network..limited or no connectivity". I've done everything that the internet company has asked me to do as far as my modem/router is concerned, and Acer wants to charge me a buttload for their help. Am I missing something simple that I need to do with my 64 bit software? I downloaded the 64 bit drivers for my LAN, audio etc from the acer website but it seems to still do no good. I even downloaded the driver directly from my Lan ethernet controllers brand website.

I've been stuck here for days without much help and the wierd thing is that my girlfriend can plug her computer (32 bit vista home premium) right into the router and it connects fine. I'm downloading SP2 now if that makes any difference. Your help will be much appreciated.

99% of the time its a driver. Have you found the 64bit vista driver for you wifi card? You can check by going into device manager (type device manager in search) and look for the networking tab. are there 2 devices there? one for LAN, and 1 for wifi? or is there an "unknown" driver listed with a yellow triangle on it?

Ken

Btw does everything else work?

Just the marvell yukon ethernet controller is under the network adapter tabs. Everything else but my sound works. The sound came on once, but now always has a X on it. I haven't paid too much attention to that though. I installed the 64 bit driver for the yukon ethernet adapter though. I even installed different versions. Pretty much everything else seems to be fine.

edit: i just found another "texas instrument 1394 controller" is this my wifi? lol

I'm sure that the lan drivers are installed for 64 bit. There is also one thing that caught my attention though. Under windows there are two folders: the system32 and one called sysWOW64. Is this where all my stuff should be because i just installed 64 bit windows? or is this something that doesn't matter? The driver came with a self installation setup. I tried reseting the adapter, aquiring new ip adress, using a static ip adress, setting it to obtain one automatically, etc. The sound is working now though.

I will give 10-20 dollars via paypal for whoever helps me get this fixed.

I'm a computer tech and have run into "Unidentified Network" with increasing frequency. Like most of you I have scoured the net and tried several solutions, none of which EVER have worked for me.

I had a laptop in my shop last week that had this problem, primarily with the wireless. I finally tracked it down to a virus that had infected the computer and attached itself to the TCPIP stack.

Yesterday I got a practically brand new Dell Inspiron 537MT system running Vista Home Premium in my shop. Owner said from Day 1 it would not stay on the internet. She spend hours on the phone with Dell support who diagnosed it as a spyware infection and offered to remove it for a $200 fee. When I hooked it up to my DSL line (she was hooked directly to a Comcast box) it got right on the internet. But after I rebooted it said "Unidentified Network". I tried many of the solutions mentioned here and elseware on the internet, without success. Tried old and new NIC drivers. Nothing helped. I finally got a spare PCI network card and installed it in the computer and it worked perfectly. The PCI card was a DLINK DFE-530TX+, the Dell's onboard NIC was a Realtek RTL8102E. I considered the possibility the Realtek might have a bug (either on the chip of with the driver software), but this particular NIC has been around for a while, you'd think a bug as bad as this should have been caught by now. So I went to the registry and started comparing the NIC information under Registry key

HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

Under this key will be several numeric keys (0000, 0001, 0002, etc). My two NIC cards were 014 and 015. After comparing several of the subkeys, I zeroed in on one called "*PhysicalMediaType" (note the "*"). On the NIC card that worked the value was decimal 14, Hex 0e. On the NIC card that DIDN'T work, the value was ZERO. On a hunch a changed the zero to decimal 14, rebooted and PROBLEM FIXED. Amazing!

I did some searching on the net and haven't been able to find any info on "*PhysicalMediaType" and what the values mean. But it sure fixed the problem.

Those of you who are having problems with "Unidentified Network" might want to check out the above registry key for their NIC card and see what the value of "*PhysicalMediaType" is.
