Vista Home Premium PC intermittently cannot be pinged

My girlfriend's Vista Home Premium laptop intermittently loses the ability to be pinged and for its shares to be accessed from other PCs.

The PC connects to a Netgear DG834PN router by wireless and is getting a 4-bar signal.

Sometimes, two other PCs, also connected by wireless, fail to access her shares and cannot ping the PC. The error is "failed to resolve" rather than "no reply".

Even when her PC is in this state, it can access web sites and can download email.

The remedy is for her to disconnect from the network and then reconnect. That always solves the problem, though it may reoccur as little as five minutes afterwards.

No other PCs on the network (my Vista Business laptop and her XP Home desktop) are affected in the same way: they can ping each other.

Does anyone have any suggestions what is going wrong?

My laptop and her laptop are currently right next to each other, so they will be experiencing virtually the same wireless signal strength, suggesting that it's not a wireless signal strength issue.
