Sharing files and folders between two networked vista machines

I have a vista 32 laptop and a vista 64 desktop on a private home network. I want to share files between both computers and be able to write and overwrite files from one to the other. I have goodsync installed however when I try to copy files or write files from my desktop to my laptop I keep getting the response that I don't have permissions. How to I set up permissions to share files and folders and also write, etc from one computer to the other over the network? Any help would be appreciated. This was so simple when using xp!

I'm not a network expert. But(don't they always say "but" then the trouble starts?) from doing my own mixed home Lans I've found the easiest way is to use a workgroup with the already public folders. C:\Users\UserName\Public is already shared on the Vista machines.

So you would enable file and printer sharing, make sure both machines are using the same workgroup name("workgroup" or "mshome" whatever... Vista has "workgroup" by default) turn off the Firewall, turn off password protection.

Here's the weird thing. Once you get it working with the public folders, then you can go into Properties for a folder and share it. You want to make sure permissions for Everyone are full control.

Once you get it all working if you want to turn on the firewall or whatever that's fine. Just change only one thing at a time and see if it works.

There should be a tutorial how to enable file and printer sharing for exactly which drop downs to use and buttons to push. But I think you'll have easier success if you use the public folders first... then add others one by one until you know what will work without hassle.

Hey, just uninstall any third party apps you've installed.

I am an expert with networking. I have easy ways to do it. Enable 'File Sharing' in the Network and Sharing Center on both machines. Having Vista on both actually makes everything easier.

Just go to 'Computer' and right-click the drive (or any folder) you want to share. Change the sharing settings as in XP. Do this for all the folders and drives on each machine. It may take some time to apply the settings to all the files inside. Now, you need to map the folders in order to see them on both computers. On both the machines, right-click anywhere in 'Computer' and select Add Network Location and browse through the shared folders.

Remember that you need to have both machines connected to your network to carry out the procedure. If everything goes well, you will have access to all the network locations you enabled, from 'Computer' on both the machines. You have the choice to enable modifying the files somewhere in the Sharing settings.
