No IP address for disconnected laptop

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this. I have a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop configured on a static IP address. With the network connected all works as expected. When disconnected and rebooted networking is not active and the adapter is shown as "Media disconnected"

I have tried to disable media sensing (which would fix this on Windows XP) by doing:-

1. Adding a DisableDHCPMediaSense DWORD with value 1 to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

2. Running the following commands as an Administrator:-

netsh interface ipv4 set global dhcpmediasense=disabled
netsh interface ipv6 set global dhcpmediasense=disabled

Neither options appear to have had the desired affect. Any ideas anyone?

Some outboard modems, particularly ones going through a coaxial cable connection, need to be restarted if the connected computer or router is disconnected. Do what you did, only also power down and and back up the modem, and see if the device remains disconnected.

This problem relates to the built in network adapter of the laptop. I want the laptop to report the static IP address assigned to this adapter, even when no LAN is physically present...

A couple of questions. Why do you disconnect from the network and how do you do it? Why do you need the laptop to send the static ip to the NIC when it is disconnected?
