Solved The Wireless Network that won't die

My old router was replaced by a new router, but my computer keeps trying to connect to the wireless network associated with the old router. This seems to be preventing me from using the new router. So I have tried to delete the old wireless network. It disappears and then reappears a few seconds later. So I tried another approach. I "moved down" the network. But it moved itself back up a few seconds later. So i changed its settings to manual connect rather than automatically connect. But it changes itself back to automatic a few seconds later.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can try next?

Can you post back with more details about your set up please. You haven't told us what router you had before and what you are replacing it with, also what type of machine do you have is it desktop or laptop.

It would help the experts if you filled in your system specs with as much detail as possible they would then know what system you have and be better able to give you the proper help.:)

Hi,

Thanks for responding:) I have spent hours trying to fix this. And I rang the broadband provider (Virgin Media) and they were no use, even though it is their router.

The old router was taken away by the broadband provider, but I think it was a netgear. But I don't have the model number. It was white:)

the new router is a d-link DIR 615.

My computer is an Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop.

Another interesting point is that my girlfriend's laptop doesn't have this problem. It can connect to the new router, and she doesn't have this issue with the old wireless network trying to connect as well. My laptop was the one which I used to set up the new router. But hers is the one that works fine.

It is worth noting that this problem started as soon as the new router was set up. I tried to fix it for a few days to no avail. Then it just came right by itself and was fine for 3 or 4 days. Then the problem returned again, and hasn't gone away. I am using the internet now by connecting a cable to the laptop coming out of one of the router ports.

My iphone also has no problems connecting.

Thanks again and appreciate any ideas you may have.

It looks like this one has everyone stumped? I guess I might have to take it into a repair shop, unless anyone has any experience with this problem? Seems like a unique problem. I can't find any other discussion of it on the web

Sorry I've taken so long to answer but I don't really have any further suggestions for you apart from, have you made the new router the default.

I have no knowledge with regards laptops or the routers you use, you say you've been into all the settings and deleted the old router, have you checked in the Internet Options of your browser to make sure that there's nothing there that may have been left behind.

Sorry I couldn't be any more help hope you can get it fixed without too much trouble or expense.:)

Have you gone into the manage wireless networks and removed the old connection? If not try it then do a restart and see if it shows back in there. Please let us know if it works. Thanks

Hi,

I've had the exact same problem. I had virgin wireless at uni and when I came back home my laptop wouldn't connect to the internet properly and when I deleted the connection it kept reappearing. However, after I uninstalled all the Virgin internet manager programmes (the virgin wireless was set up on my laptop as well) I was able to delete the wireless connection from the 'manage wireless connections' page.

Hopefully this will help people who come across the same problem in the future.

Thanks for posting that antieagles20. It may indeed help someone who has that problem and reads this thread.

Welcome to Vista Forums! While you should post questions or problems in the appropriate forum as a new thread (posting to old ones often doesn't get many responses and posting a similar question/problem to a current one is called hijacking and is discouraged as it complicates things as soon nobody knows who is talking about which situation and that can cause mistakes or problems or at least confusion - and it isn't polite). You did just fine here though - so don't worry about that. if you have questions about the forum or rules or anything like that, either post them in the Chillout Room or send me a message and I'll try to assist you.

Good luck!
