Cannot detect wireless networks

Hi all,

First off, let me preface this by saying that I am very ignorant about computers...

My laptop can't detect any wireless networks. The ethernet works fine. I have Vista Home Premium and use an Asus Laptop.

I have no idea if this relates, but every time I start my computer, an error message comes up saying that windows host processes has stopped working.

THANKS in advance-

Caroline

Hi Caroline,

I'm not sure if there's a Vista Guru here about to reply... in case not, I thought perhaps I might be able to assist as I've troubleshooted this kind of problem before.

First off, are there any other computers in your household that are successfully using the wireless network? If so, when they connect does the wireless network show up in a list? Some networks can be configured not to broadcast the ID. In that case, you wouldn't see anything in your list.

The windows host process could very well be tied to a different issue. But in the course of troubleshooting, it may become more clear if it is involved.

Hi! Thanks for the reply.

There are other computers using the router in the house successfully. The network does show up on their list of wireless networks.

^ well that's good to know, certainly narrows it down a bit.

Is your laptop brand new, used but new to you, or have you had it a while? If not new, was your laptop ever able to connect to this or other networks? Also, check to see if there is any 3rd party software installed that manages your wireless networking.

Hello caroline21,

I would suggest to update or re-install your wireless adapter driver.

You can do that through the device manager.

Hi,

Sounds daft but have you got the wireless connectivity turned on & switched on from the laptop enable switch?

Please post: -

Hi,

Look here: -

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

These are all the drivers for your laptop. Under wireless it recommends "Please first install the Wireless Console Utility before this driver installation".

Please check your drivers against these originals & updated ones, then update as needed.

I would also recommend you install Vista SP2 if you would?

This worked for me:

1. Restart your computer hitting F10.
2. From main setup utility screen use your right arrow key to select System Configuration at the top of the screen.
3. Use your down arrow key to select Boot Options and press enter. Look at the list to see if your Internal Network Adapter Boot is Enabled. If it isnt, use your down arrow key to select it and press enter. Select Enable and press enter.
4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5. Select Yes to save changes.

Your computer will finish starting now. But you may have to shut it down again and restart it normally.

Hope this helps.

OK,

Well done for sorting out your issue. Where did you get the answer from, trouble shooting on the manufacturers website?

As for using your wireless connectivity it would always help to have it enabled. It is most likely but not always the simple things that catch us out. :o

I would still recommend the update to SP2 + any more!

I just happened to stumblel accros it. My computer actually told me to check the boot options. I have been trying to fix this problem for about a year. I dont understand why it was disabled in the first place. I never changed it.

Thanks to all-

Unfortunately I'm a bit tied to my computer for the next couple days with final exam work and haven't had a chance to update to SP2... However I will do so ASAP since it sounds like that is the consensus.

Also Lottie: I checked the drivers on the asus site and I appear to have the most recent one.

The laptop is detecting the wireless printer in the apartment.. but nothing else here or at other locations with Wifi connections.

My Computer

I've had this laptop for about a year and a half. It was able to detect and connect to wireless networks up until about a month and a half ago.... I haven't installed anything new.

No 3rd party running the wireless- Just windows.

That's very useful information. So, up until 1.5 months ago, you had no trouble connecting and now you cannot see any wireless networks. It may well be that some updates to Vista mangled your wireless connectivity. I've experienced something similar, where I was perfectly fine for many months and then suddenly ran into a problem that required me to do all kinds of tweaks to Vista.

Since you've not yet applied SP2, I definitely recommend doing that once you have time. It could very well fix the problem. Good luck!
