Unable to connect to wireless network

Can anyone help with the following problem please?

I am unable to connect to a wireless network.

I have an Acer Aspire 5315 with an Atheros AR5007EG wireless adapter. This shows as "working correctly" in Device Manager. I have tried to re-install drivers for it endlessly. They all seem to install ok but I still have the problem.

The symtoms are....

1) If I try to setup a wireless connection I get "An unexpected error occured". There are no useful looking messages in Event Viewer.

2) If I use "Diagnose and repair" I get "The network adapter is experiencing driver or hardware related issues".

I have uninstalled just about anything that I think might be causing conflicts. I have scanned for malware. I have run chkdsk and sfc. I have all the latest updates from Windows Update. I have tried in Safe Mode with Networking but still get the same results.

OS is Vista Home Basic 32-bit SP2.

I'd be grateful for any advice that might help to resolve this please.

Well,

If it's not working & you have the correct drivers, then, it must be "Broken"?

Does it work in another PC? If you can test it.

By your post it seems as you can see other signals.
Try to log into someone elses signal to see if the box comes up asking for a key (this is diagnostics not hacking).
If it does ask for a key then your card is working.
If it fails then turn off the firewall and other security software on your laptop then try again.
If this fails post back and I will try to come up with a solution.

>>"By your post it seems as you can see other signals."

Thanks. No, I can't see any wireless networks at all.

However, I have now proved that the hardware is ok. I booted up from a Live Ubuntu CD and that was able to see and connect to wireless networks immediately. So, it definitely seems that some obscure software problem on Windows is causing this.

I'm begining to think of re-loading Windows from scratch but would love to hear of any other ideas before I go down that route. Thanks.

Thank you. I had tried one or two from that site but your link lists several. I'll try those from the most recent backwards and see where I get to.

Turn off your firewall software to see if this is causing a problem.

Thank you. I have turned off the Windows Firewall and as far as I can see there is no other firewall installed. Other people have said that these symptoms can be caused by firewall problems.

I will try a few of the additional drivers next. I won't be able to do this for a couple of days when I'll report back. I appreciate the various replies.

My Computer

Hi all,
I have a Acer Aspire 5315 also, and the exact same problem has happened to me Friday Evening (24th June). I am running on Windows Vista Basic 32-bit. I cannot connect by Ethernet or WLAN to by router. I have tried both static and dynamic (DHCP) IP addressing, and there is no difference. It just will not connect to anything past 'Limited Connectivity'.

I have noticed that in Device Manager there is no problems with the drivers for either Ethernet or WLAN, and they haven't been recently updated as no roll-back driver is available. There is a peculiarity though... Under the Driver tab for both Ethernet and WLAN, the Digital Signer is 'microsoft windows' (note the lower case 'm' and 'w').
I have checked on another Windows Vista Home Basic laptop and the Digital Signer should be 'Microsoft Windows'. Do I have a set of false/infected drivers here?

Any help is greatly appreciated from all that have this and similar problems.

Hi,l

First you need to create your own thread but this advice is true for both of you: -

Code:
In device manager uninstall the device & tick the remove drivers box.

Then, reboot & install a known working set of drivers. That might cure
the issues?

I have also re-installed Windows and now all is working correctly. I still have no idea what caused the problem or whether it could have been fixed without a re-install.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Hello,

Well i have an acer aspire 7730 zg and had the same problem after installing windows 7. Just out of curiosity did you up date vista of late? Try uninstalling the last up dates up to the point it stopped working. or restore to a point before. I am not saying thats the problem but it turned out for me that one of my up dates screwed up my wireless. i also have a Atheros but not sure on the model. If mine is the same then i will up load the driver for you. (for vista of course)
