wireless network OK, but no internet on Vista laptop

I have a Gateway laptop running Vista and I can connect to the wireless network but not to the internet. I can't even connect if I plug it directly to the internet. I get the network windows in the bottom right hand corner but no world. What should I do??

Hello and welcome. Look at Device manager to ensure network drivers are in fact showing no yellow icons which would indicate driver issues. If that is good. then open up Network Sharing center.. and on left side . have it Diagnose and repair.. post how this goes please

Tried that and nothing happened. It did not fix it. there are no problems in device manager.

If you go to Control Panel\Network and Sharing- Can you use "set up a connection or network".

Also, is Network Discovery on?

yes I can and yes it is. It is connected to the wireless router but there is an x between that and the internet. It will not even work with a wired connection

Have you tried laptop straight into modem?

As youre connecting properly through to your router, it's not a windows issue. Are there other system on the network?
If no... Seriously check to see if the modem to router cabling is in the wan port not in a lan port.

Have you done a network reboot? Unplug the Modem, router and computer. Then plug in modem, let it load up. Then plug in the router let it boot. Then power up the computer.

Are you certain the modem isnt broke?

Not a modem problem. Every other computer can get on the internet just fine. I plug it directly from the modem and still no internet. It must be a windows problem. Not my laptop. I was told that it was not able to connect to the internet after they downloaded a virus. Tried to look for solutions but nothing works so far.

What happens when you try to set up a connection from Network and Settings? Error messages?

Oh. Thats another complete issue.

Did the system get cleaned?

In all honesty, this is a good candidate for a wipe and reinstall.

So much can be messed up, and take way to much effort to fix what may be messed.

I say back up their documents and reinstall.

That was what I was think. I was hoping there was a better solution to just wiping and reinstalling though. I guess that is probably the best solution that way I know I get rid of the problem.
How do I get to Network and Settings?

Network and settiungs is in the control panel.

I made an error above. I meant Network and Sharing Center.

I wanted you to go to "Set up a network or connection" and then select, "Connect to the Internet" to attempt to make an internet connection.

I have attempted that several times and still no internet. No error messages

Wipe it... Its going to be a very long process, and headache.. if youre bored, try it but it may not be worth it though.
