Switching from wireless to wired networking doesn't work

How do I switch from wireless to wired networking?

If my laptop is off, I plug in my network cable and switch the wireless radio off, Windows starts fine and I can reach the internet.
If I turn on the radio and unplug the network cable, I can still reach the internet.

If I plug the cable back in and switch off the wireless radio, Windows can't find any networks.

The only way to use a wired network is to plug in the cable and restart Vista. Why is that? How do I fix it?

I cannot tell you why, however you can run with both connected at the same time. The wired will take over the connection. That's what happens on my laptop
I have just experimented replicating what you have described and mine works.
Question, are you giving it time to reconnect? I tried mine three times and each time it took about one minute or more to reconnect.

I don't think that's what's happening - that's why did this test. My wireless is not consistently reliable and so I want to switch to wired when possible.

Yes, I've given it well over 10 minutes.

However, some new information: The problem I describe in the OP occurs only when my laptop goes into one of the power saving modes while using wireless. That is, I'm using my PC wirelessly, walk away from my it and return to a black screen. I move the mouse and the PC comes back. Then plug it into the ethernet and turn off the radio. The network does not reconnect.

Something is going to sleep when the PC does and not waking up.

Check device manager and for your wireless NIC and ensure that it doesn't sleep when your computer does to ensure the card stays powered

If two connections are detected windows will pick the connection with the best bandwidth and latency. Typically this will be the wired connection.

Hope this helps,
Josh! :)
