Streets & Trips stopped working

Hi, I just started using Vista 64 on my new Sony notebook last week. I installed MS Streets & Trips 2005 right away and it ran fine right after installation; however when I tried starting it last evening, I got the following message:

"Your registry settings for this application were not copied correctly. To correct these settings run Setup again for this application from the location where you
originally installed it."

I reinstalled S&T, but got the same message when attempting to start. I completely uninstalled S&T, rebooted, and reinstalled...same message. I did a system recovery from a date when S&T was working...same message. I tried an older S&T 2004 same thing. The only thing I can connect with the behavior is installation of Office Home&Student 2007 a day or two before the behavior, but the older system restore didn't support any connection. Does anyone have any idea what's happening?

Hi dlstorm,

Welcome to the forum

Uninstall the program

Run a registry cleaner such as CCleaner - Download

Reinstall the program

I hope this helps

Thanks, Pooch. Unfortunately it didn't work...same old error message. This is one of the most intractable problems I've ever experienced.

OK then try uninstalling it. Right click on the install.exe and select install as Administrator

When it is installed if it does not run, right click on the shortcut and do the same again. You will have to answer yes to the UAC.

If it works now, Right click on the shortcut again select Properties, select the tab Compatibility and put a tick in the box run as administrator it will then always start in this mode

Eureka! It works...although I didn't uninstall. I just went straight into compatibilty and clicked to run as admistrator, and it starts up. I do now have to approve each startup now, though.

Thanks much, Pooch.

Welcome to the club, this is the price of security, :) I am pleased that it is working though :D

Yes, I suppose security is good, but it is ironic that I have to approve the startup of a MS program by MS Vista...very strange behavior. I've also installed Garmin Mapsource and Delorme Topo and have not had any such problems. Ccleaner does require approval while other non-MS software does not. There seems to be no apparent consistency to Vista's administrator security controls at least to us struggling to learn it.:(

It all depends on the program, if it just does USER or ADMIN tasks for example CCleaner works with the registry and has the capability to delete it, this could clearly be called a threat. Other programs though are maybe not quite so obvious like your MS Streets & Trips 2005.
By the way 2005 was before UAC. It may be possible that the new one works without ADMIN rights.

OK, thanks again Pooch; S&T is still running fine but I still have a question about this security/administrator approval thing. It would seem reasonable that once the administrator OK's a program as safe and allowing it to start up, that should be it. It gets tedious constantly approving some of the same software start-ups over and over. Is there any way of just OK'ing something once as the administrator?

Have a read through here including the links;

To my knowledge its the best you can do with Vista, The UAC in Se7en is a lot better

This problem just reared its ugly head on my Quad Core HP desktop. I have been a MS S&T user for several years and buy a legal new version every year or two.

This is extremely frustrating and shame on Microsoft for handling this issue in this fashion.

I don't mind paying for a program and I don't mind the verification process and the constant need to "validate" but this method of just disabling software because there "MIGHT" be an issue is unforgivable.

I was trying to plan a trip this morning and if I didn't have Garmin Mapsource on my computer also I'd be out of luck and high and dry.

Microsoft you really struck out this time.

I already have to put up with the crippling Vista software which strongly reminds me of the nightmarish Millennium Edition. Vista frequently locks up forcing cold boots but now this? After running Windows for almost 20 years with very few issues (excluding ME problems) now this? Ridiculous!

Shame on Microsoft!

My business has nearly ground to a halt due to Vista and I fervently wish I could put XP Pro on this machine. XP Pro was fantastic and I really miss it. Maybe Windows 7 will be better?
