No sound after hard shutdown

Hi,
I am running Vista 64bit Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron. I have a Creative Audigy SE sound card installed. The sound was fine until we experienced a loss of electricity this afternoon which resulted in a hard shutdown, after which I had none. I have tried updating the driver (using the driver I already had installed), uninstalling and re-installing the device, and re-seating the card, but without success. If I click on speakers in Control Panel/Sound and play a song, the volume bar acts as if music is playing.
Should I replace the sound card, or do I have a software problem (registry, perhaps) caused by the shutdown.
Thanks in advance,

to help eliminate a software or hardware problem do you have onboard sound card to switch on?. have you tried using system restore back on a date when it was working?
just in case of damaged files, try runing "dxdiag.exe", "sfc.exe /scannow"
it may be worth trying a proper reinstall, remove the hardware from device manager, remove the software and then takeout the card and rebooting. then use a driver cleaner such as this for eg Download Driver Cleaner Pro v1.5 (freeware) to remove old files and profiles then reboot once. shutdown and reinstall the card.
