Permanent Disable Defender Updates?

There is an option on the update home page to hide updates. If you hide the update you should never see it again unless you select the "restore hidden updates" option. Also on the update home page. Below is a more detailed explanation on how to hide updates.

I don't use Windows Defender, and I constantly get message to update it. Is there a way to stop these notices?

\Thanks
Hello dagzag,
It is absolutely Not recomended, but are you actually asking to turn Windows Defender off ? You can only "hide" the update(s) that you have already been notified, when a new one made available, you'll be notified again. The only way to stop notification completely is to turn windows defender off. You don't really want to do that. Can you not just put up with a little inconvenience ?

well, I dont use Defender because I already have Norton's Full Security Suite, so Defender is redundant to me..or I am misssing something? Thanks for the replies:)

Hello dagzag,
Suggestion : rephrase you question into something like " I have Norton's Full Security Suite, should I or do I need to keep Windows Defender on as well ?" Post that question, and see the pro and con from the MVPs. Then you decide.

dagzag, I understand your exasperation with Windows Defender which is trying to update itself again and again, even when switched off (lame). Sure, this issue bothers many users. Windows Defender is a service, stopping it does not stop automatic updates (lame x 2). Crazy, but Microsoft likes to keep things embroiled.
Hiding particular update will not do the job neither. Next update will come and pop up :)
Here is THE SOLUTION. Before turning Windows Defender off, as suggested by t-4-2, go to "Automatic scanning" section of Windows Defender options:
1. Disable "Automatically Scan My Computer"
2. Disable "Check for Updated Definitions Before Scanning"
3. Click "Save"

t-4-2, suggestion to rephrase? It is not nice that you rebuke dagzag. His question was clear enough. Besides, you entail more questions without providing answers. I SUGGEST not to reply in such case at all.

to everybody: it would be valuable that somebody confirm this, it worked for me but you never know, it's Microsoft.

Hi JackStone,

What you recommend makes sense and may well prevent the problem - it's certainly worth a shot. When I switched to MSE, it automatically disabled Defender and Defender never tried to update itself - so I haven't experienced the problem (as I never tried to disable Defender without having an alternative and as it is possibly the best choice for that, I've never needed to do it). If after Defender is disabled using your method first, the issue continues, I would recommend going to Start / Search Box and type msconfig and enter. Then go to Startup and make sure that nothing relating to Defender (like the update feature) is checked - if so, uncheck it.

If that doesn't work, try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

After that, if your solution and the above did not resolve the problem, then I'd post the issue here with all the details and we'll work to find the cause and resolve the problem.

Thanks for posting.

Best wishes!

Good help guy's, this thread is a couple years old though, I guess we'll wait to see if they are still looking for a resolution.

Either way your info will help someone else in a similar situation.

Jumping into the old topic ....

Windows Defender can be disabled in 'Services' (local). I have done this on all 3 of my computers and I don't get Windows Defender update notifications.
