Overnight scan on laptop

Hi, I hope this hasn't been asked before - I have searched but failed to find anything similar...

I want to be able to run security scans overnight on our laptop at home (ie when no-one's using it) but I can't work out how to get the computer to "wake up" from sleep or hibernate or whatever to enable the scan to start. At the moment the best fix I've found is to disable the sleep and hibernate when the charge cable is in, and leave the laptop open (and switched on) overnight every couple of days, which isn't ideal for the laptop - or my electricity bill.

Is there an easy way to set the computer to wake up when a scan is scheduled?

I think I've added the computer details to my profile - but just in case that didn't work, we have a Dell Studio 15 with what I believe is Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Cheers, Moose.

1. No you can't have your AV ( anti-virus ) program to run when the computer is turned off.

2. " I think it is 32-bit "...
Start button > Computer > toolbar, System Properties > under System, at System Type.... it tells you what bit version you have.

Thank you. Now I know it's 32bit... and the wake up schedule seems like it'll do the trick. ;)

Hi again, thanks for your help but I'm afraid it didn't work. It seems I have another problem with the task scheduler - Error message: "The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with.SystemToolsDailyTest"

I'll come back later and post that as a separate thread, I'm up to my ears in other stuff at the moment and don't want to trouble you for help with something I've probably caused myself somehow.

Cheers anyway, Moose.

You dont need all those software tests, etc. They are nothing but problems. This is all you need to do

To maintain your computer

10 Tips on How to Properly Maintain Your Computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.
http://www.piriform.com/

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

Thank you both for the help. I have run the sfc as suggested, and there were items that it could not fix. I have saved the logfile as per the instructions but am unsure how to interpret them. I haven't attached them here as I don't know if there is anything in there that could be a security risk if I post it online, but if it's safe to do so could I put it on here and ask someone to interpret it for me please?

No probs if it's unsafe or too much trouble, I'll just leave the computer as is and hope it doesn't get worse!

Cheers, Moose.

Hello!

It shall be I who will look through your log! They are safe to post, and many have done this before you.

Do you mind saving me a bit of time, and posting your log in a way I prefer?

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks a lot!

Richard
