9 second freezes

Sometime last year I had this problem. This could start at any time apparently but once it does my whole computer freezes up for 9 seconds exactly, then it's fine for about 50 seconds or so, then frozen for 9 seconds, etc. This will repeat until I reboot the computer. I somehow manged to fix the problem and had completely forgotten about it until the other day.

I wanted to hibernate my computer but the options weren't there so I found this page and entered the commands into the Command Prompt:
How to Re-enable Missing Hibernate Option in Windows Vista? - Tweaking with Vishal

It sort of fixed my hibernation, now the Start Menu power button would hibernate, but more importantly the 9 second freezes started up again. I quickly ran the Hibernation File Cleaner in Disk Cleanup which is apparently what removed the hibernation option in the first place, but no luck, hibernation was now gone and the freezes still continued.

I know this is a Windows problem not hardware, likely something to do with Explorer since during the freezes I try to shut everything down and usually any Explorer windows that are open will not close, plus the computer will also not restart from the Start Menu it just gets stuck on the "shutting down" screen.

I built this computer myself a few years ago here're the basic specs:
Vista Ultimate x64, Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz, GeForce 8800 GTS, 6GB RAM

Anyone have any clue?

Hallo philnolan, I am only having a guess. If a restart fixes it for a time it would possibly indicate a memory problem (although i am way out of my comfort zone here but it may give you something to start with).
Possibly test your ram i know memtest is frequently recommended.

Thanks but I've tested my RAM (with MEMtest) several times over the years for other reasons and it's fine.

It was just a thought, i am sure someone who is more skilled than me in this area will pick up on your thread soon. Best wishes :)

I had that problem and it was the system checking for updated. Disable auto update check, and reboot. .

YMMV
