I've been through several Vista machines lately, and most of them are fine. But this Compaq F700 isn't. I've changed the adapter, uninstalled adapters, un/reinstalled drivers, used the MS Fix, turned off power saving, played with the Registry, and set up a dedicated Internet connection, all to no avail. The adapter will only produce "unidentified" local-only connections.
I'm appending the output of ipconfig /all. I see that the atheros card now reports 192.168.1.1 as the gateway/dns server, as it should be (it's a router). Previously it was using 192.168.2.1, which is incorrect. I manually changed that in the registry, but I think that would have gotten wiped when I un/reinstalled the card, and that this is Vista correctly responding to the router's dhcp protocol. But still no Internet connection.
I just booted from a Linux disk and had no problem connecting to either of two wireless connections. Oddly, one used a 192.168.2.112 ip, and the other, 192.168.1.165. I have no idea why the first one worked.
