The ghosty svchost.exe has bothered me for a long time so I decided to find out why it once a while consumes one core of the CPU (approximately 50% of a dual-core CPU). First I closed all running applications and it did not make any change. Then I found out all the services hosted by that particular instance of svchost.exe by using the Task Manager and stopped them one by one. There are two services that the service manager does not allow stopping: 1. Task Scheduler. 2. Remote Access Connection Manager. Anyway, all of this did not make any change to the CPU usage of the svchost.exe instance. I am suspecting svchost.exe goes out of whack causing the excessive CPU usage unless the two unstoppable services are the culprits.
