Solved BSOD Vista x64

I'm getting a BSOD about a minute into the startup process. The problem started after I tried to backup my machine to one of the externals, which crashed during the process and I had to shut the computer down manually. I had also done some cleanup of my 2 external USB hard drives. I've tried starting the machine with the drives unplugged, which didn't help. I've tried several different restore points with no luck. Everything seems to work OK in Safe Mode (which I'm on now). I ran the BSOD Dump program and the .zip file is attached, but I got an error when I tried to run
perfmon /report.

Edit: I'll also add that when I try to click on Windows Update, nothing happens.

My Symantec is under license through work, so I don't have have the serial number that the link asks for. Would uninstalling Symantec and then reinstalling from CD work? I also noticed that Symantec won't let me run an update from the program itself.

Hi,

You could try but you could still need the activation key.

Hi,

You could try but you could still need the activation key.

I think the license is actually part of the software, since I didn't need an activation when I initially loaded it.

Anyway, I tried to uninstall and got an error that I couldn't do it in safe mode. I also tried to reload Symantec, and got the same safe mode error.

I'll add that it does appear that Symantec is the problem, because it is showing some error messages when I open it.

Hi,

It sounds like your going to need the administrator password for the PC.

Can you contact your IT support team & get them to help you?

Made some progress last night! I went in to MSCONFIG and disabled Symantec and the machine booted normally. Once I had the computer up, I uninstalled Symantec and ran Windows Update. I just got done reinstalling Symantec and everything looks to be back to normal.

Regarding your question, the computer is my personal machine, so I'm the administrator. Our IT Dept doesn't provide any support for the AV software, the company provides it for free, under license, and you take it home and load it. Essentially it was a response to people infecting their work machines by bringing in viruses from home. I wasn't asked for a key when I reloaded, so I'm pretty sure the license is embedded. Thanks for the help!!!
