Solved bsod

64 bit
Windows home premium is the original OS.
OEM
bought last quarter of 2008
os has never been reinstalled, however i ordered the reinstall discs from hp and it will arrive on march 8th.

problem: bsod intermittently for a month
ran memtest twice from a boot-disc: passed
ran hardware diagnostics twice passed
updated windows and everything i could think of.
heres where i hit a wall. the nvidia gfx driver would not update. the driver downloaded from the nvidia webpage will not find hardware. i uninstalled and tried to reinstall to no avail. screen was glitchy. bought an ati radeon today. at first all was working well (5min) then boom bsod after bsod after bsod. even in safe mode. mosttimes it will not even make it to the setup screen to enter bios or safemode.
norton was working and found no threats. after a driver rollback norton needs to be reactivated but can not get pc to stay on long enough.
i would seriously love any help you could give me.
thanks again.

Hello Clark and welcome to the Vista Forums!

While waiting for our BSoD expert to come online, I shall just give you a little bit of advice so that you are more prepared when he arrives :)

I have run all 44 dumps supplied.

A lot of them may point to the hard disk. Have you checked your hard disk using Sea Tools for Windows (SMART check if possible, Short and Long self-Test (DST))

Another six or so reference nVidia drivers, and a few reference Norton.

Do you really like Norton? Our expert is going to recommend uninstalling it, and installing the excellent, and free, Microsoft Security Essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

MSE is a really good piece of kit, actually. A great number of security and BSoD experts recommend it. I use it.

We want to remove Norton to get one of the BSoD causers off your system.

That is all I want to say for now,

Richard

I have not ran sea tools but will do so since you recommend it. i have however ran the os harware diagnotsics on a boot disc and it could not find any errors what so ever except it did not find the nvidia drivers or hardware.

I do like norton but if it fixes the problem then i can remove it.

thanks for the info richard

Hello again!

Those bootable diagnostics probably test your memory, RAM, rather than your hard disk. I am not the expert.

Wait for the expert, and he will say whether it is worth running SeaTools and removing Norton. He will probably be online in a few hours.

Thanks!

Richard

You have given us about 40 reports and just for this year. I ignored the earlier ones.
Usually a large number of reports gives us various clues as to the cuase and it can be quickly resolved. Unfortunately, you are in the minority.
Basically, your reports give many different drivers as the cause, probobly none being accurate. Due to the large number of drivers given as causes, the number of reports and the reason given on several, including this one:

Points me to hardware. Rich could be right as to suggesting the hard drive. One minidump gave ntfs as the cause, yes a driver, but an indication of hard drive problems.
The most common cause of Hardware problems is memory, so lets start there. We will get to hard drive if not solved sooner.

Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
Run for 8 passes
If passes try a good stick in each slot for 3 passes
If fails do the same for 8 passes.

In addition, I agree, with Niemiro, lets eliminate one possible cause, go with Microsoft Security Essentials. If you truly like Norton, make a system restore point, first. In that way after this is solved you can go back with Norton, again. I, however use MSE and like it. After this is done, I can give you my security suggestions, to be, in my opinion at least as good as Norton.

Dont worry about the quantitiy. I just checked the most recent, started with January 1
It may take a while. Im going on the hunch that its hardware, there will be a lot to check and then we may even have to get into software; but one step at a time.
If you return with the conclusion that it is not memory, take the upgrade advisor test. Sometimes it finds hardware problems.

If you are going to get a SSD, I would wait to install Seven. It would be nice to install it on a brand new Drive.
If you are saying, can you move the HD with Seven to a new computer, there MAY be problems. If you have the upgrade version of Seven, no you cannot. If you have the Full Retail you can; understand, even with the full retail, only one machine at a time.

i have the seven upgrade.
can i reinstall vista on the other identical hdd that came with the system or should i buy a new hdd? i am asking because if one died then does that mean more than likely the other will die sometime and i will have to do this all over again.
if i buy a new hdd what size do i need for vista? what size do i need ssd for seven? do i just follow normral reinstall procedure for the new hdd with vista?
thank you richard i have added to your reputation as a small payback even though you have helped bigtime..

I understand that you have the seven upgrade. If you do, you must not use Vista any longer. If you want Vista and Seven, you must use the more expensive full retail DVD.
If you understand what I am trying to say and still have questions, just post and I will try to help. Thanks for the rep, very nice of you.

ohhh ha sorry i was just confirming that i have the upgrade and not the retail so therefor i am going to stick with vista on this system and run seven on the new rig being built in two months.
should i buy a new hdd instead of using the second identical hdd that came with oem system? what size hdd do you recommend for vista? i would rather buy a new hdd then risk using the oem. i have done some research and most people say i can reinstall from the hp reinstall disks onto a new hdd. do you believe this to be true?

With the upgrade, you have to do the Seven upgrade on the computer that has Vista.
You can put Vista on the new computer and then put Seven. But you Cannot legally run both at the same time. That being the case, I think that you can build your new computer with a HD of your choice. My HD is 500 GB, more than enough for me. I have most of it free. The size of the HD depends on what you want to put on the dirve in addition to the OS.
For 7 or Vista, 64 bit you will neeed a minimum of 20GB. It may be a little less for Vista, but not much. I would suggest a hard drive at least 100GB, for programs, pics etc.

You should be able to use the HP DVD to reinstall on a new HD. You may not be able to use an HP OEM disc on a new computer; it IS illegal and may not be possible.
