cant install xp over vista

hi,i have a laptop with vista on it,im trying to replace it with xp home when i try installing i press a key when asked then at the bottom of screen it runs through everything then when it says it will now install windows the screen goes blue with a message saying windows has encountered a problem and has closed..can you help

What is the version of XP and is it upgrade or full retail?
What is the version of Vista that you have now?
If it is possible, you must do a clean install.

xp home full retail...vista basic,would do clean install but cant get that far

How are you doing the install and precisely what happnes?
Why not keep Vista? If its programs that dont work, use compatiblity settings.

i set the l.top to boot from disc,then when it says press any key to boot from cd i do so then it runs through its sequence then when it says windows will now install thats when the screen comes up saying theirs a faught

OK sounds like incompatilbity problems. Format your drive first.
