I believe I have a driver problem. The problem being that the driver thinks it works but it doesn't. My card reader on my advent 5401 does not work. I know it's a software problem because when I run my system under linux it works fine. The driver I have installed is Texas Instruments PCIxx12 2.006. (I have already uninstalled and updated it.) I don't use my card reader often but I kind of would still like it to work.

Go to device manager and look for any yellow markers by the driver, if none, try to roll back to previous version. New is not always best

& get the drivers from the listed CTL website (FTP, files listed under Vista): -

I have followed this thread and it appears as if you may have a file that has wrong value while using windows OS , but, it works using Linux, which to me indicates that somehow the windows file that controls this needs repairing.

I recently showed some files not repaired using Scannow , which is a command prompt that goes like this :
sfc /scannow .

Give this a read and see if it helps you out. Oh, my files not repaired dealt with the sidebar , seems as if Microsoft is aware of it and advises not to be concerned, so, that is a relief for me. Here is what i used to repair my files, which did not require a clean install or a dvd to pull applicable files off of , or a need to use a dvd for a repair program.

If you try in another user account it may work. If you do not have one create one, at least for a test.
