Computer Blue Screen?

Since I have been running Avast v.5 Free AV (2weeks) and just downloaded MS patch for IE8 my system has been jumping to blue screen telling me to go to Safe Mode. From there I ran Malware (0 infections) full scan, went to Superspyware found 8 adware infections. The adware infections are from all over and would like to know how to eliminate them.
What else can I do to send you more info on what's going on? I don't open e-mails from unknown places and haven't downloaded anything other than Avast. This happens on a daily basis.
Any and all help will be appreciated.

Hi,

1. Can you tell us exactely what blue screen error message you are getting and if you are doing anything in particular when it happens?

2. Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump, zip up the contence of the dump files and upload them to your next post. Then we may be able to help you. You may want to put them in your Documents folder first.

1.Was a full page of info but then went and dump alot of files. I went to Safe Mode and did Malware (full scan) zero infections, spyware found 8 (put in quarantine file) and rebooted. Once rebooted I did a full scan with Avast and found 0 infected files.

2. Found 7 minidump files. Went to upload and it showed all 7 files invalid. But I don't know how to attach them to this thread. Not to swift on zipping files. Help!

If these instructions are not enough, post back and I will include screenshots to accompany each step!

1. Goto and download 7-Zip here: Download 7-Zip from SourceForge.net

2. Open 7-Zip and navigate to C:\Windows\

3. Right click on Minidump (the folder)

4. Hover over 7-Zip (the top option) and select "Add to Archive..."

5. Click OK with out changing anything but making sure zip is displayed in the top left hand corner as opposed to 7z.

6. Navigate to and upload that new .zip file to this site. Now it should work!

Once I do the above then how do I attach it to this thread?
I went to paperclip and saw many browse buttons and tried to upload a zip file and that's where I am at. How do get from that stage to this thread?

What you can do is to explain how to send an attached file(zip) to this thread so you can review it. I know that these minidump files will tell you how my system crashed.
All the minidump files both zip and .dmp, since1/26/10, show up as invalid files and when I close the window nothing appears on the thread I want to send to you.

Hi,

Sorry that I did not make this clear enough. On your next post do the following:

1. Click on the paperclip button.

2. Click on the first browse button, the one at the very top.

3. On the left of the new screen, click computer

4. Double click on the C:\ drive

5. Open the Windows folder

6. Scroll down and click on Minidump the .zip file NOT the folder

7. Click the OK button

8. Click the upload button. This is vital. Once the window
has finishished reloading, close it. This will take about a
minute

9. If you click on the arrow next to the paperclip, on the same button as the paperclip, you should see your zip file!

10. Send your post.

NB I will provide pictures when I am on my computer as opposed to my iPhone now.

I found the zip file and get to #8 and it shows Mini 12710-01.7z and below it is reads invalid file then when I go back to paperclip there is no arrow, just the attachment arrow down and the abc checkmark. Where is the arrow next to paperclip?

While we are trying to get a fix on this I have uninstalled Avast and downloaded Antivar AV to see if the same problem occurs with their AV program. I also sent Avast Support the file and the zip file and maybe they can shed some light on this problem of mine.

Hi,

Follow my steps again but this time when you get to the Add to Archive section, in the big options window that opens, make sure that zip is selected as opposed to 7z in the top left hand corner. This time I promise it will work. Don't worry, I will not abandon this thread even if it takes 100 posts!

Thanks for hanging in there with me but several things happened since yesterday. I can't do the above request as I went into My computer, properties and did a disk clean and it wiped out all the dmp files. However, here is an update of what is going on.
1. My system crashed 2 more times and I got so mad I uninstalled Avast AV and installed Antivar AV and so far so good. No crashes all day!
2. Sent an e-mail to Avast Support regarding my issues and they ask me to send them a zip file or a dmp file. Somehow I was able to send both of files to them. Still waiting for a response.
It was funny that I had no crashes with the old version 4.8x? butr I really liked the way the new version 5 looked so installed it. Not funny anymore!
I posed the same question to Window BBS forum and they didn't have techs that could solve my problem with Avast v.5, but another member posted on my thread that they had the same problem. So I am not alone.
When I get a response from Avast, after they review my 2 files, I will let you know of there fix.
Again, thank you very much for you efforts and will let you know if Avast has a solution that we can share with everyone.

In Control Panel,Systems,Advanced System settings,Start Up & Recovery settings,system failure box, Write debugging information, mine shows kernel memory dump. I could select none, kernel memory dump, or small memory dump(64kb). Could this be the problem area for Avast AV free version 5? I sent this info onto Avast Support today.

I think it is unlikely that this is causing your problems, it just tells Windows how much debugging info to save. The small file is often enough, however we can diagnose more complicated problems with the kernal memory dump. If you select none, it means that we have nothing to go on.

If you have any more problems, send me the new zip file and I will be happy to analyse it for you.

Here is what Avast Support response was the my issue. I guess that is why everyone should wait a period of time before buying/installing anything new so they can get all the bugs out!

Thanks to all avast! users, we can receive a lot of information helping us to fix these problems - within ten days since the original release date, software development team was able of creating seventeen builds of avast! 5 fixing reported bugs. Hopefully in a few months, avast! 5 will be even better then its predecessor avast! 4.8 (after seven years of development...).

I think it is, however I am not entirely sure. I cannot work out if the default is None or Small. I imagine it would be Small as this gives tech support people a huge leg up when it comes to solving a BSOD for only 64kb on your hard disk. I doubt that the default would be Kernal however. It definitely would not be Complete as this option is not available for 32bit systems or systems with more than 2gb of ram. It requires a large paging file (your ram size + 1mb) and takes up quite a bit of hard disk space.

Sorry that I often took quite a long time to answer, this is due to the fact that I have to go to school and I can only use my iPhone in the mornings and my computer in the evenings, homework permitting.

You don't have to apologize for delays getting back to me. Your job or school comes first. I retired earyl to take care of my wife who is bedridden with Progressive MS so time is not an issue.

My OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bit and all 3 options are available with 3gb or ram and kernal memory was the default.

You are going to pull your hair out when I tell you I uninstalled Antivar and installed Avast AV again as the updated version is 5.0396! You and I are going to make this work one way or another. I will wait for Avast Tech Support 10 day response and go from there. Now get back to the books and I will check in later.
