Computer freezes after a few seconds at the login screen

Hey there people of the windows vista forums.
im posting here to ask for some much needed help, so heres whats going on..
first off im running windows vista home premium, 64 bit on a Hewlett-Packard.
every time i start up my computer and it goes to the login page with my picture and the password box below, after a few seconds everything completely freezes.
cursor, everything.
i have enough time to type in my password if i do it quickly, but if i do that, the loading circle appears like normal then freezes anyway.
safe mode still works.
i have had my laptop for about two years i would say, and have never had this problem.
I tried disabling all of the startup things like a bunch of other websites told me to do, but that didnt help.
i also did a system restore to last tuesday, (8 days ago). the system restore was successful but it did not fix the problem. (does this mean its hardware related?)
this problem started about three days ago. the first time it happened while i was logged in and on my desktop. restarting my computer fixed it the first few times, but now it wont work.

help would be extremely appreciated!

Have you got a Vista installation disc?

If it is fine in safe mode then it is more than likely not hardware related. Since a clean boot didn't work then I'm leaning more towards problematic drivers. Please see if this helps: Using Driver Verifier to identify issues with Windows drivers for advanced users
