Solved Default printer problem

Hello posted this in Office but I think its more of a windows problem if anyone can help me please ?
Hi, new to this and not a techy Since either installing a new hp 7500 or doing my windows updates i cannot set the printer as the default. Its there and installed and I can print Word documents but cannot print excel or web stuff. Tried MS helpline who say its the hp printer called them who took me through some checks and they say all ok with the printer. Im kinda thinking aaaaaaaah Can anyone help

It's a good idea when you come on this forum to use the Quick Links(you should see it near the top right section of the forum page in your browser - may vary depending on the forum skin you are running) then click Edit System Spec.

Otherwise it's almost unavoidable that the next 10 posts in this thread will be asking you what hardware, software, and amount of memory you have, etc..

Also if you post another problem clicking the specs button is all that's need to find your info.


If you have HP equipment it's well worth signing up to this forum:

Even though it says "business" it's not a paid support. It's just people who all own HP equipment. I find there are many people on that forum who have used HP for years. Often they are more knowledgeable than phone support staff. A hotmail address works fine for signing up. It's free. Also there are downloads with original drivers and updates, and the software package as well as User Manual in PDF for any HP hardware you are likely to have.

btw, if it's caused by Windows Update, if you have a restore point from before the update, that might fix it. Usually update makes a restore point automatically.

Hello chap,
Thanks for that I googled computer spec and found a load of figures (see told u I was a non techy) he he Im kinda hoping what I found is enough ? Thanks for the HP link I will give them a go. Googling the problem I think that I have lost !! My printer registry editor keys as when I go into it it doesnt give me the printer name and the winspool stuff that i see people say should be there ? Hope this makes sense ? Hand thanks for the help so far.

HI HE SAYS IN CAPS DELIGHTED. Went nervously into REGEDIT and typed in Winspool,Ne00 and Reg_SZ did a restart and hey its fixed my Hp auomatically set itself as the default and I can print again. Thought id report back but thanks for your support All the best Colin.

Glad you got it fixed. I hardly use my printer anymore. Forgot most of what I knew about printing and associated issues.

In a way it's kind of sad that the consumer machines have caught up with "business" PCs so that much of the forum stuff at that HP site is being consolidated. The long time expert help will probably wither away. Still a good place to get the software that came with the machines. Everything changes I guess.

(It may seem like a pita to fill in the PC specs but if you run into another issue, esp. OS related, then post here, you won't get side-tracked with basic questions about what you have.)
