Hello

Does anyone know how to make your desktop different themes or change your desktop from the norm. I don't like the themes in Vista Home Premium and want to totally change the whole thing, you know bring it into the now and not the past.
Any help would be great and thank you.

My desktop is a pic that I took in Italy. It has a lot of nice memories for me.

How to Change Desktop Wallpaper in Windows Vista | eHow.com
http://www.ehow.com/how_5018556_change-wallpaper-windows-vista.html

Number 4 in the tutorial below shows how to use any pic that you have saved. Use browse as described in the tutorial.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91134-desktop-background-wallpaper.html

I have given you three different articles on changing the wallpaper. I think that our tutorial has the best explanation. The other two can also help. One is a video showing how it is done. The second explains the video in detail

With the film clip and the tutorial,is should be easy for you to do. Ask questions if you have any concerns.

Hi Rich thanks for the post but I want to change all icons to something more then what vista has and the entire skin on desktop, I have been through all the different backgrounds that vista has offered within the program and none is really appealing. So I would like to remodel the whole thing to suit me, futuristic like. Maybe someone makes a software that will change things in vista or maybe there is something already hidden in the system that I have not found.

So any more recommedations would be great.

Thanks
Tom

I think that your friends in Seven, such as Arc, will really be able to help.
You do realize that with what I gave you, you can use any pic, that is on your hard drive and make it the background.

Yes I know that, but there must be a way to change all of the icons etc with something more then what vista offers. I love Vista but the colors theme well to be nice it is not very good, maybe if we had more colors and a lot more icons that are different that might due. Thank you for your help Rich I do value your opinon very much.

Hi Tom,

I don't know where to begin with the icons. There are hundreds of sites with free icons available depending on what you want. Here's one search to get you started: free icons for computer - Bing. If you're looking for a particular type of icon, change the search parameters to say "free futuristic icons for computer" or whatever you're looking to find.

As far as changing the icons, try the following article for the basic procedure and even some suggestions: VistaKnowledge.com » How to: Change icons in Windows Vista » Windows Vista Desktop Customization & News. The following article will also help: How to Change File Icons in Vista | eHow.com (and here, also pay attention to the additional articles linked on the right side of the page where you'll find more information that will help).

If you want to change folder icons and not just file/shortcut icons, that too can be done but it's a bit different and we have an excellent tutorial on that here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88515-folder-icon-change.html.

You can even change drive icons if you want per another excellent tutorial here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/111388-drive-icon-change.html.

I hope this helps as far as the icons go.

I think Richard already covered the background, but let me add the following. You can add a feature from W7 to Vista to be able to use Dreamscene for the background with the following tutorial in SF: DreamScene - Install in Windows 7 and Vista - Windows 7 Forums and then search for "dreamscene backgrounds" - they're about as futuristic as things get.

Good luck and best wishes. Post if we can be of any further assistance.

You can set up a Vista Theme if you would like - What you will need to do first is to Patch a Certain .DLL Please be warned that if you ever run a System File Checker this will Unpatch this File

See VistaGlazz - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com For More Information

After that you are going to need to find a Theme

I believe this Tutorial on youtube Explains very well

I could have gone online and found sites for the desktop. I refrained since, I do not have any way of knowing which will give you the desktop and more, maybe even a virus.
Sites with such downloads are notrorious for such extra gifts.
So if you decide to use some of the sites suggested or find your own, be satisfied as to what you will actually receive. Even endorsements by reputable companies is not insurance against a possible problem.
Im not saying that all of the sites suggested are problems, I am saying I do not know.

Here's another option Tom, it's not free but there is a free trial to see if you like it, it's called Windowblinds Stardock.com - Your Edge In Software

They have quite a few custom themes and other stuff too, something to look at anyway. ;)

Hello and welcome to the forum Mich, your question can be found here try the CHILLOUT ROOM and check out POST YOUR DESKTOP. You will find many different taste's along with many different styles, and thanks for becoming a forum member.

You can always right click your desktop, then view, and then click show destop icons which will hide them and then when you need them just reverse the process.

Thanks very much americancritic I realise you are trying to help and that is appreciated but I do not have a question, I was just making a comment, :D but thanks anyway.

Hi Americancritic

Maybe you can try this out.
With this tool i change all the default icons for folders at once in Vista.
You can set a path to an icon that you've downloaded or created.
All folders with a default icon will get the one set by you.
And the next time you create a new folder,
it will also look like the set icon.
The opened folder icon is the one you see on the button in the taskbar,
or when you open a folder in the Start menu under All Programs.

I hope this may be helpful.
