Driver_power_state_failure

within the last two weeks i have been experiencing some strange behavior from my laptop. first it started freezing (the screen would completely glitch, i dont know if that means anything other than it froze) then erractic shutdowns (sometimes even failing to shutdown) and last but not least i experienced a BSoD for the first time since i got the computer saying "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE".
i think i fixed the "freezing" so far. i think it was my computer overheating. i know your thinking "well duh!" but i just want to make sure the two problems are connected somehow. my computer has overheated several times before and simply shut off it never "froze".
iv ran a mem test and nothing came up and the event log service for some reason isnt running and vista wont let me start it, something about error code 1402. im currently working on that problem but any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

comp specs:

Toshiba Satellite P-305D
Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium
Hitachi ATA 320gb hdd
AMD Turion X2 dual core
Samsung 2048x2 DDR2

if more info is needed feel free to ask

I had a similar problem. I have not been able to restart or shutdown successfully. I got a blue screen with the same message that you did. I'm trying to search for a solution right now, but I'm not as tech savy as I should be. So I wanna see if anyone else has an answer.

I don't know much about my pc's specs, but its:

Gateway Laptop
Vista Home Premium 32bit
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Cpu

First:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Malware (read the details at the link)

Next:
Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
{Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service - then post the link to it.
Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): Set MiniDump
