Dual ATI graphics cards

I'm running:
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 1.73 GHz
3.5 GB RAM
ATI Raedeon Xpress 200M Chipset
Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit

I have recently installed a ATI Radeon HD 4670 into my computer, I downloaded the latest ATI Catalyst driver from the ATI website and it installed the latest driver for both of the video cards, after it restarted I get this error message in the device manager for the ATI Radeon HD 4670:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

I checked in the device manager and it says it has the same wddm driver version for both devices, I have tried installing many times but it continues to presist, is this a Windows Vista or ATI issue? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

you have drivers installed on your notebook for a discrete videocard. in other words, the drivers for the hd 4670 are for a card that installs in a desktop computer. the radeon xpress 200m is the intergrated video for the notebook. you need to uninstall the drivers for the hd 4670 and install the drivers from here: ATI Catalystâ„¢ Legacy Display Driver

i once had an acer notebook that had the radeon xpress 1100 graphics. i had to uninstall the drivers via driver sweeper @ guru3d (Guru3D - Driver Sweeper). if you have to use driver sweeper, everything is pretty much self explanatory. already have the driver for the xpress 200m downloaded so when you reboot, you can immediately install the driver.

I'm more interested in how you managed to install the 4670 into a laptop; and if it is the mobility version, where you found it.

You could wait forever here seeing as most will have never even heard of this thing, let alone have one.

read up on the vidock on their website. my only suggestion is that you need to disable the intergrated (xpress 200m) graphics by way of the device manager. you could probably do it in bios too, but as soon as you boot, you would default the the microsoft driver and you would have an 800x600 (or worse) desktop.

you can't run two different device drivers for the same thing without something not working...

Missed that part from the OP, and even more so with both cards being the same manufacturer. Based on the first screen shot you have the catalyst 9.3 installed for both, or at least Windows is loading the 9.3 for both. Uninstall everything through Programs and Features using the ATI Uninstall Utility, then install only the Cat 9.3

if you use the guru3d utility driver sweeper, you should not have any remnants of ATi software or drivers left. when you reboot, it should "find" the radeon xpress 200m, but it should load the generic microsoft drivers. after such, install the catalyst software.

download and install Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from Guru3D.com

instructions Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

uninstall everything ATI gpu related in control panel , drivers last

reboot into safemode

run and use driver sweeper

boot into windows and install your driver package (do not install your drivers in safemode)
