Hi I am trying solve an issue on a c700 notebook win vista home basic 32 bit system

Whenever the machine starts up it gives me the following error box:
16 bit MS-DOS subsystem
C:\PROGRA~2\mswd\mswd.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered and illegal instruction.
CS:1202 IP:0104 OP:63 46 60 6b 71 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

If I 'ignore' nothing happens and if I 'close' then the computer shuts itself down after 5 min.
I tried to do a system restore but that has not worked and now all the restore points have disappeared.

Also i run AVG Free 9.0

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

still couldn't get any info on the log but second scan came up with no integrity violations.
I am running a third scan now.

I have had to run these in safe mode. Will I also have to try running them again in normal mode?

Third scan has also come up clean

Hi Richard,

After following all your instructions yesterday the NTVDM issue is solved however i now am having exceptionally slow internet and missing windows features too. My instinct after this many hours of working on it is to try a repair and if that fails to try reinstalling the os.

Do you have any other suggestions?

By the way your help was fantastic and i have added to your reputation

First TY for your kind generousity.

Here are some suggestions to determine the cause of the slow internet. It is a long article, which I read quickly. Some of the ideas are awesome. Take your time and try to find a solution.

Some of the more salient ideas are checking for a virus using your anti virus and download and scan with malwarebytes, full scan and updated.

Try with clean boot, I dont think this was mentioned, but this may solve your problem

Read the section about IE.

I would try a repair install and see it that helps after trying some of the above steps

What are the missing Windows features?
