Hi,

I have a weird problem with my pc.
So far every program works but when I browse in Program Files or in the file extension folder I see that many extensions have that typical Windows icon, when Windows doesn't recognize a certain program/extension. See the icon in the printscreen.

I'll give a few examples of extensions:
.BAK .cfg .db .bin .dat .bat .asp .pif ...

Does anyone have an idea how to fix that?
(I know when I install certain programs that this will be resolved, but how can I fix typical Windows Extensions?)

Any kind of help is welcome.

I've dwnldd every file and merged it into the registry and did a restart.
Unfortunately none of them seem to have been resolved.
For example I merged an .bat file, rebooted, and in the Extensions Folder nothing has changed. See screenshot.
I'm not trying to discourage you but there are over a hundred extensions without the right icon and program attached in the Extensions Folder.

Although I did notice that when I log on with my built-in admin account and browsed the Extensions Folder that there's no problem what so ever.

Do you have other suggestions?

For a test open aother adminsitrator user account. Sounds like corruption

Is it just the icons that are missing? Icons are stored in imageres.dll, I seem to remember. Non Windows icons are stored in C:\Windows\Installer as a general rule.

Please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5 from this tutorial System Files - SFC Command Then run STEP ONE from the top yellow TIP box, and upload the sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop.

Hi

I created a new admin account and there were no problems in the Extensions Folder what so ever. So my problems occur only in 1 administrator account.
(This is the one I log on to every day).

No, I did the sfc/scannow with elevated priv. and as usual I found files that couldn't be repaired. Even when I do a fresh install of Windows and perform this scan I see that there are files who are corrupted.

You'll see in the report that its the Sidebar --> settings.ini that causes problems.
Because I've got Rescue Disks from HP I had to dwnld the same original disk with Home Premium 64 on it to substract the files.
I manually copied the settings.ini from the disk to the Program Files and (86) Sidebar folder, that went ok. And rescan with sfc.
As it shows in the sfcdetails log my problems still occur and I need a specialist to guide me. Maybe I need to copy them to other diretories as wel.

Although I didn't see any problems in the log regard to images.dll or any other System32 error.

I'll try to upload the sfcdetails.log.
I used the: findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and deleted everything older than the last scan.

Hi to the followers of this article.

I just wanna say that I deleted my corrupted account and made a new one.
This will be the fasted way in resolving this issue I guess.

So it wont be necessary to give a complete review on how to resolve the corrupted extensions. I already did some suggestions and none of them helped.

Although I would want to know how I can resolve the corrupted/damaged files after doing a sfc.scannow. (settings.ini from Windows Sidebar)
I followed the steps provided in that link, (copy healthy files from Windows disks) to replace the faulty ones. I did exactly what this tutorial told me to do, but for some reason those files are still damaged.
Though it's not a severe problem because I don't use the Sidebar, nonetheless I would like to do a sfc scan without seeing any issue at all.
And this would be a first since I bought this pc...

Really, from the first day on there were problems with the settings.ini from the Sidebar. When I bought this pc Vista was pre-installed and I had to make rescue disks for myself. I complained with HP to get orginal Home Premium disks but they wouldn't give me them. So they forced me into dwnlding an exact copy so I could extract any healthy file in case of need. No the funny part. It's exactly the same as when I copy them from my Rescue disks.

So f you have the time and patience to guide me throu the proces of curing those damaged files I would be grateful.

Hi Richard

I tuned in to see if your still working on my sfcdetails.log?
By creating a new account my problems with corrupted icons are gone, but ever since I bought this pc I had some errors which didn't heel after the sfc scan. In particular files of the Windows Sidebar. So I need some assistance on that.

By the way this locations also stores icons %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
