I have read about this error on a couple other websites and nobody had posted a solution for it other than to install it on XP and copy the installation files over. It pissed me off so for the past 20 minutes I have been working to come up with this workaround.
- Install 'Orca' from the Windows Installer SDK (A standalone for x64 can be found on the internet).
- Copy all the files from the DVD to a folder on your computer
- Open 'Far Cry.msi' in Orca.
- Go to the 'Properties' table on the left and click it.
- On the right side scroll down to the value that says 'This installation cannot be run by directly launching the MSI package. You must run setup.exe.' and remove the row from the database by clicking on it and hitting the delete key.
- Hit file -> save
- Go back to your far cry folder you created and run 'Far Cry.exe'
- Make sure you do NOT install the version of directX it comes bundled with (Do not click it).
- Install
- Enjoy
