Solved Firefox bookmarks missing

Suddenly today, out of the blue, my FF bookmarks went AWOL. Most of them weren't showing up. Also under show all bookmarks I can't restore from auto generated backups either. A combination of importing from an html file (that was saved in the FF profile) as well as manually stopping and then starting all of the extensions/plug-ins has somehow restored about a third (I can see the links in the html so I know that they are there). FF safe mode didn't help and neither did a disk check. Other than reinstalling FF I'm not sure what to do. I'm running version 7.

You can try installing Firefox portable. It may still pick up all your bookmarks. For future reference I like SyncPlaces if you have your own ftp space. It saves and restores both bookmarks with favicons and passwords. Also when you restore the bookmarks toolbar is not scrambled. It restores it perfectly.

Nope and now I have alot of the same article entry (which I've never been to): BBC News - Libya's Col Gaddafi 'killed in crossfire', says NTC

Also I should add that show all entries is virtually empty. Other than this firefox is working fine.

I'm going to try MSE/MBAM scans and get back to you on that.

Download and use shadow explorer, it will bring the lost items back.

So am I. I had to go back to yesterday afternoon. Any idea what went wrong?

It would be my opinion at boot or shutdown there might have been a power surge, that can cause all kinds of courruption and problems.
Also try a full anti virus and malwarebytes scan, although I dont really think that was the problem.
Check the event viewer to see if any errors are found at that time.

FF history is still missing. Do I need to restore the same file or is that in another file?

btw what version of FF are you running? I'm still way back on 5.x

Once you posted this issue, and i saw what Rich had posted, i checked out mine in the Shadow and found mine in the User profile under favorites. Whew, i was getting scared there for a minute, but, they are there. I wish you luck on finding yours, as it is quite a task re-doing them.
