First Ever BSOD

Hi Everyone,

Just had my first BSOD in Vista while loading a 1.6gb file in photoshop.

Any idea what the BCP codes means - The blue screen had no other info like .dll's or .exe filenames that could cause the issue.

Hi Damocles,

Just a thought. I noticed you have your motherboard overclocked to 3ghz. Maybe you should try running it at factory settings while you load up a huge file like that. I'm thinking it might be choking on the big file and overheating or something like that.

Did you try and load the file again?

It may have been one of those occassional Adobe crashes I get with Vista x64 (it happens to me less than 1%).

The ambient temp was quite warm in the room last night and the system had been pushing it for 10 hours solid. I'm going to u/g the processor to a 3ghz quad soon..but in the mean time I will keep tabs on the heat situation.

Reboot : chkdsk / defrag then reloaded the file - seemed OK

quick way to determine if it is a stability problem......

download ORTHOS stress tester..

run it first on... priority 8/ small FFTs.... for 30 mins this will determine if the CPU is stable under load
then run ....priority 8/ blend stress CPU & RAM ....this will determine how solid your RAM is under stress
the priority 8 is far more intensive on h/w than 1 is..
these setting will show any hidden weakness on your machine in seconds

if either of these tests fail you need to bump up your ..VCORE or VDIMM slightly

Ah!

priority 8/ small FFTs - fine no errors

priority 8/ blend stress CPU & RAM - went belly up after 3 mins with 1 error and it stopped....I can't find the file that tells me what the problem is.

I've just got back so I will reset bios to default and see what happens.......Oh no, do I have to build that 32 GB, 8core workstation I've been fantasizing about? :D

Before I reset to stock setting - it happened again with the same error code and again in Photoshop loading a different large file from a different drive.

Could it be the first signs of a disk error?

All at stock now - priority 8/ blend stress CPU & RAM running for 30mins without errors - A good sign I hope.

you either have a bad stick of RAM...... or they're just under volted @ load.

its not the HDD...

i would try them on slightly more power before we condemn them ....its likely all it needs is a little bump

if they continue to fail under load with more volts then you will have to begin the process of elimination!!

try the DIMMs one at a time & use ''memtest'' to confirm the bad stick

Phew....thanks for the clarification and voltage tip.

Unfortunately I didn't O/C it myself so I'm am a little hesitant to mess with the bios at the moment - however I will try the memtest - Those sticks have been working well for a long time and they have some large fans directed at them too.

I am currently working on something for a client so as a rule I try not to mess with hardware when I have an important project on as it could mean loss of earning if I mess up the system ( quad back up system is in place - a bit OT I know!! ).

Infact, the project file is 2.4gb and when loaded ( which it did OK albeit slowly ) into PS the scratch disk goes up to 26GB - all seems fine at stock speeds and performance doesn't seem to be hit by this reduction in the bios.... not noticeably anyway

I was going to get a new processor very soon anyway and install it after the project - I'll take it from there....( although, it's probably not a processor issue - a good excuse though ).......that's if I have time as I have to build bare foot kid's 32gb octo cores :D....eeerrr that was a joke - Right?

Seems stable now..........touch wood.

Funny you mention that...

That is the server I am working on at school 8 quad core CPUs and 4 GB RAM per CPU....


But, yeah, do test extensively when you get the chance. and make sure you've spring cleaned your machine out as well....dust bunnies play havoc with heat.

I'm very envious, how does it run? I would love to see Photoshop run on that baby. Do you know which Motherboard it uses?...I'm tinkering with the idea........

My system is pretty clean but on hot days the ambient temp in the room can rise quite high - even with fans on I'm sweating cobs at the desk so I'm sure that was the trigger for the bsod. I ran memtest and all sticks are good.

Seems like it had a wobble and is back to normal now......
